John Rydqvist is the head of the Asia Security Studies programme at FOI, and a
specialist in WMD (weapons of mass destruction) strategy and Asian security.
His research includes the dynamics of the strategic balance in East Asia and the
Pacific theatre, strategic weapons modernization and force transformation in key
regional and global powers.
Nina Startseva is a journalist and was born in Ashkhabad in Turkmenistan. She
graduated from the Department of Journalism at Turkmenistan’s State University
and worked as a correspondent for mass international mass media such as
Deutsche Welle, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) and the
Eurasia Foundation. She specialises in energy politics and the gas and oil sectors.
Because of her work she came under close scrutiny by Turkmenistan’s Security
Services. After a few years of pressure and persecution, she was forced to leave
Turkmenistan. She now lives in Sweden, works for Deutsche Welle and is
studying politics at the Swedish National Defence College.
Ye Hailin is editorial director of South Asia Studies at the National Institute of
International Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (NIIS, CASS). He is
also director of the Center for Regional Security Studies in the School of
Advanced International and Area Studies, East China Normal University
(ECNU). He is the deputy director and chief secretary of the South Asia Studies
Center at CASS and was elected as a member of the Standing Council of the
Chinese Association of South Asia Studies. He graduated from the School of
International Studies, Peking University (in 2000 with a master’s degree. From
2000 to 2003, he served as a police officer. From 2003 to 2005, he was a
diplomat at the Chinese Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. In 2006, he joined CASS as
a counterterrorism expert. He is currently working on Islam issues and South and
West Asia regional affairs. He has published a series of essays and books on
South Asian studies in both Chinese and English. He is a commentator on
international affairs for China Central Television, China National Radio and the
Xinhua News Agency, and chief commentator of the International Herald
Leader, a Xinhua newspaper.
