Economic Council Helping Others, Inc. provides<br />
numerous services to low-income individuals in<br />
San Juan County: emergency rent, self-help<br />
affordable housing, emergency food boxes, preschool,<br />
commodities, and non-pr<strong>of</strong>it agency food<br />
program.<br />
This is an umbrella corporation for agencies that<br />
do provide all <strong>of</strong> these services.<br />

The housing choice voucher program is the<br />
federal government’s major program for assisting<br />
very low-income families, the elderly, and the<br />
disabled.<br />
The primary concern <strong>of</strong> this program is to provide<br />
the tenant with decent, safe housing, providing<br />
the family or individual participants are able to<br />
find their own housing, including single-family<br />
homes, mobile homes, and apartments.<br />
There is a waiting list, and the length <strong>of</strong> time is<br />
about 24 months. The Housing Authority may<br />
provide a list <strong>of</strong> apartment complexes upon<br />
request.<br />
Applications are accepted on Mondays and<br />
Wednesdays only, and applicants need to bring a<br />
picture ID.<br />

Grants, deferred payment loans, and/or low<br />
interest loans for rehabilitation work, re-ro<strong>of</strong>ing,<br />
electrical improvements, plumbing improvements,<br />
and weatherization up to $25,000 is provided for<br />
low to moderate income individuals (up to 80% <strong>of</strong><br />
median income).<br />
*Must live within city limits;<br />
*Must own a house;<br />
*Must be low income (i.e., family <strong>of</strong> one-not more<br />
than $22,250, and a family <strong>of</strong> four-not more than<br />
$31,750).<br />
