Private, non-residential non-pr<strong>of</strong>it corporation<br />

that serves people with disabilities. Provides a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> community-based, consumer-driven<br />

services to people with disabilities to promote<br />

independence, self-reliance, and integration into<br />

the community.<br />

Independent Living Skills Development: There are<br />

Independent Living Specialists (ILS) on staff who<br />

are knowledgeable disability advocates. The ILS<br />

is an expert negotiator and will provide the<br />

consumer with independent living enhancement<br />

skills. The ILS can assist with collaborating with<br />

other community agencies, thus making the<br />

service access process less stressful.<br />

Advocacy: The SJCI works diligently to increase<br />

community options, and to resolve issues that<br />

affect large numbers <strong>of</strong> people with disabilities,<br />

by changing policies and laws through work with<br />

government agencies to ensure legal and civil<br />

rights.<br />

Peer Support: Peer mentors provide consumers<br />

with Peer-to-Peer relationships and will provide<br />

consumers with valuable “been there”<br />

information. Peer mentors outreach to newly<br />

disabled people, youth in transition, and<br />

individuals in nursing homes.<br />

Personal Care Option: SJCI <strong>of</strong>fers consumers an<br />

independent living option known as the “PCO<br />

Program.” The purpose <strong>of</strong> this service option is to<br />

provide consumers with the opportunity to live in<br />

their own homes within their own communities.<br />

The consumer is in charge <strong>of</strong> who they hire and is<br />

free to live their lives independently as they<br />

choose.<br />

Equipment Loan Bank: 30-day loan <strong>of</strong> durable<br />

medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.),<br />

and various communication devices (TDDs, pads,<br />

etc.).<br />
