Record of Issues that Arose in <strong>the</strong> Regional Consultation on 3/12/2010 at BAU, Mymensingh<br />
A number of experts, extension officials and farmers actively participated in <strong>the</strong> discussion on<br />
investment priority of CIP. Following priority issues were put forward for consideration:<br />
1. Utility services in <strong>the</strong> rural areas: support to preparation of spare parts of power tiller,<br />
pumps, etc.<br />
2. <strong>Investment</strong> on development of climate resilient technology<br />
3. Food and nutrition: <strong>the</strong>re is vast scope for food processing, refinement of food processing<br />
technology<br />
4. Support production of high value vegetables and fruits<br />
5. Genetic improvement of poultry, goat, cattle and buffalo. Poultry should not be ignored in<br />
<strong>the</strong> genetic improvement programme of livestock.<br />
6. Training is important for capacity development of scientists and farmers for technology<br />
generation and adaptation in crops, livestock and fishery.<br />
7. Support production of quality seeds, feeds, fingerlings, drugs and vaccines.<br />
8. Promote contract farming with public-private partnership, capacity development of<br />
farmers’ organization<br />
9. Encourage community based extension services by updating farmers’ knowledge and<br />
skill, and institutionalizing community based extension services<br />
10. Support fisheries development through:<br />
• Management of inland marine fisheries- assessment of sustainability of emerging<br />
species like Tuna.<br />
• Small scale inland aquaculture- promote good aquaculture practices<br />
• Diversification in coastal aquaculture- Crab, mussels, sea weeds, etc.<br />
• Diversification of fish processing- e.g., processing and export of pangus fish<br />
• Support disease diagnosis facility in <strong>the</strong> regions<br />
• Quality control of feed<br />
11. Support livestock development through <strong>the</strong> following actions:<br />
• Promote livestock development for food and nutrition security<br />
• Promote small scale dairy for milk and beef production<br />
• Promote public-private partnership for livestock services- production of<br />
vaccines, drugs, animal health services and control of diseases<br />
• Vertical and horizontal integration is needed in livestock sector<br />
• Support establishment of modern slaughter house for safe food<br />
• Quality control of feed and veterinary drug<br />
• Milk processing and marketing<br />
12. Improved water management through <strong>the</strong> following actions:<br />
• Improve water distribution system of minor irrigation- improve with buried pipe<br />
• Improve cost effectiveness of irrigation<br />
• Improve irrigation efficiency<br />
• Improve surface water irrigation in <strong>the</strong> South<br />
• Rehabilitation of polders and <strong>the</strong>ir management<br />
• Construction of barrage in <strong>the</strong> downstream of Gorai river to increase water in <strong>the</strong><br />
South<br />
13. Enhance <strong>the</strong> quality control of fertilizers and soil fertility management through <strong>the</strong><br />
following actions:<br />
• Growing concern of management of soil salinity<br />
• Streng<strong>the</strong>ning of soil testing laboratory<br />
