3.8.7 Lead Time <strong>for</strong> Submission/Availability of Documents<br />

The lead time <strong>for</strong> submission of documents at any stage of consenting process<br />

is 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e the desired date of consent provided the application is<br />

complete in all respect <strong>for</strong> review by AERB.<br />

3.9 Gamma Irradiation Chamber (GIC)<br />

3.9.1 General<br />

The self-shielded dry source storage gamma irradiator is also known as a<br />

gamma irradiation chamber (GIC)/blood irradiator (BI). The GIC/BI are used<br />

in academic/medical instituttions <strong>for</strong> irradiation of blood or chemical or<br />

biological samples. The GIC/BI contains either 60 Co or 137 Cs source of the<br />

activity ranging from few TBq to several PBq. The high activity sources are<br />

placed in the source cage and shielded by lead/steel material. The GIC/BI<br />

housing is normally designed to meet requirements of type B transport<br />

package. The GIC/BI should be installed in the room where the floor is suitable<br />

<strong>for</strong> its load, since the weight of the GIC/BI is of the order of 3 MT to 10 MT.<br />

3.9.2 Procurement of GIC<br />

The Layout of the GIC installation room needs to be approved by AERB<br />

prior to its procurement. The applicant should submit the application <strong>for</strong>m<br />

<strong>for</strong> obtaining the Authorisation <strong>for</strong> procurement of the GIC/BI to AERB,<br />

along with layout details of the GIC installation room.<br />

The applicant should seek a copy of Type approval certificate issued by AERB<br />

to the Local supplier be<strong>for</strong>e applying <strong>for</strong> source procurement. In case the<br />

GIC is not type approved, the procedures <strong>for</strong> Type Approval as per subsection<br />

3.18.1 shall be followed.<br />

Prior to the procurement of the GIC the applicant should have the following:<br />

(i)<br />

(ii)<br />

(iii)<br />

(iv)<br />

(v)<br />

(vi)<br />

Radiological safety officer (RSO)<br />

Persons trained <strong>for</strong> operation by manufacturer/supplier<br />

Personnel monitoring devices<br />

Protection level dosimeters<br />

Emergency preparedness plans and procedures (EPP).<br />

Provisions/commitment <strong>for</strong> safe disposal of spent/ disused sources.<br />

Based on review of the application, AERB may issue Consent/NOC <strong>for</strong><br />

Procurement of GIC/BI and the approval of the proposed layout plan of GIC<br />

installation room.<br />

The Application <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> obtaining Consent/NOC <strong>for</strong> Procurement is given<br />

in Annexure 31.<br />
