3.9.3 Commissioning and Operation<br />
After installation of the GIC, the applicant should submit the Application <strong>for</strong><br />
Authorisation <strong>for</strong> commissioning/operation of a GIC along with installation<br />
report, dosimetry report and radiation protection survey report of the<br />
installation.<br />
Prior to seeking the authorisation <strong>for</strong> operation of the GIC the applicant should<br />
have the following:<br />
(i)<br />
(ii)<br />
(iii)<br />
(iv)<br />
(v)<br />
Radiological safety officer (RSO)<br />
Persons trained <strong>for</strong> operation by manufacturer/supplier<br />
Personnel monitoring devices<br />
Protection level dosimeters<br />
Emergency preparedness plans and procedures (EPP).<br />
Based on the review of the application, AERB may issue the Authorisation<br />
<strong>for</strong> commissioning/operation of the GIC/BI. The Application <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>for</strong><br />
obtaining Authorisation <strong>for</strong> commissioning/operation of GIC/BI is given in<br />
Annexure 32.<br />
The consentee is required to submit the periodic status reports to AERB.<br />
The applicant should ensure that Type approved models of GIC/BI is procured,<br />
installed and used. Unusual occurrences should be promptly reported within<br />
24 hours to the AERB and followed by a detailed report within the prescribed<br />
period. AERB may conduct inspection <strong>for</strong> the GIC installation as and when<br />
required.<br />
3.9.4 Decommissioning/Disposal<br />
When the gamma chamber is no longer used, it is obligatory on the part of<br />
the Licensee to undertake decommissioning and safe disposal of spent/ disused<br />
sources. The consentee should return the gamma irradiation chamber with<br />
radioactive source to the supplier of the source contained in GIC/BI <strong>for</strong> safe<br />
disposal. The Consentee should obtain Authorisation from AERB <strong>for</strong> transfer<br />
of radioactive waste <strong>for</strong> disposal. The application <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>for</strong> obtaining the<br />
Authorisation <strong>for</strong> transfer of radioactive waste <strong>for</strong> disposal is given in<br />
Annexure 50. Completion of such disposal by the consentee should be<br />
reported to the AERB along with personnel doses, if any, received during the<br />
decommissioning operation.<br />
3.9.5 Lead Time <strong>for</strong> Submission/Availability of Documents<br />
The lead time <strong>for</strong> submission of documents at any stage of <strong>Consenting</strong> process<br />
is 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e the desired date of Consent and the documents should be<br />
complete in all respects <strong>for</strong> review by the AERB.<br />
