EXCEPTIONALLY TREES SILVICULTURE AND CINEGETICS REVIEW XVII/30/2012 White elm (Ulmus laevis Pall.) from Căpeni Abstract Diana Vasile, Cătălin Cojanu, Katalin Péter The typical habitat of the white elm is riparian decidous forest, where it can tolerate prolonged flooding for longer periods and lower temperaturs than the field elm (U. minor Mill), with wich it is often associated and often confused.. It prefers altitudes of less than 300 m therefore it is not found on mountain sites. Individual trees rarely live longer then 200 years, but some trees have been recorded as old as 300 – like Căpeni elm. This tree has 2,35 m diameter and 32 m height, and it was declared in 2011, 29 November, „The king of elms”.Giant white elm will be declared natural monument and will be registered in National Register of Exceptional Trees and in Gold Book of Exceptional Trees from Romanian Forests.
