Has three anaerobic digesters (0.8 MWs). Also, the
Chariton Valley Biomass Project (a cooperative
effort with Chariton Valley Resource Conservation
and Development, and the U.S. Dept. of Energy) is
an initiative to develop switchgrass and other
Operates two biomass-fueled facilities: Rapids
Energy Center at Grand Rapids and Hibbard
Energy Center in Duluth that mainly consume
production waste from adjacent paper mills and
purchased wood. Both units also burn coal.
Xcel Energy has contracted for the development
of 110 megawatts of electricity generated by
biomass-fueled technologies. Waste wood, fastgrowth
poplar trees, and poultry litter will all be
used as fuel to generate electricity.
