2 SCOPE OF THIS SOLID RADIOACTIVE WASTE STRATEGY<br />

This report presents possible solid radioactive waste strategies for the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>EPR</strong> programme.<br />

The SRWS identifies and describes the solid radioactive waste and spent fuel characteristics<br />

arising from the operating and decommissioning cycles or lifecycle of the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>EPR</strong> with respect<br />

to the current <strong>UK</strong> regulatory requirements. The operating cycle of the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>EPR</strong> is 60 years.<br />

It sets out management arrangements for processing and interim storage of the waste and<br />

spent fuel prior to ultimate disposal in accordance with <strong>UK</strong> regulatory requirements and the<br />

Government’s DWMP base case.<br />

For each waste stream generated by the <strong>UK</strong> <strong>EPR</strong> this strategy describes the “cradle to grave”<br />

waste route demonstrating the following:<br />

· No new or orphan wastes are generated by the <strong>EPR</strong>;<br />

· All waste streams are classified according to the current <strong>UK</strong> classification;<br />

· <strong>Waste</strong> is avoided or segregated at source;<br />

· <strong>Waste</strong> is minimised;<br />

· <strong>Waste</strong> is processed using proven and internationally recognised technologies and<br />

placed in standard packages for safe handling;<br />

· ILW from operations and decommissioning and spent fuel is maintained in safe and<br />

secure state until disposal;<br />

· Lifetime records are managed throughout the lifecycle.<br />

This strategy examines the processes and describes the facilities to process the wastes and<br />

provide interim storage of ILW and spent fuel. The main facilities and processes are listed<br />

below:<br />

A <strong>Waste</strong> Treatment Building to:<br />

· House processing and packaging systems for all operational waste streams produced by<br />

the reactor;<br />

· Enable processes which are installed to be removed and replaced in the future for more<br />

modern techniques;<br />

· Provide adequate buffer storage for all waste streams prior to processing and disposal;<br />

· Provide adequate space and handling for safe operation and adaptation for<br />

decommissioning activities;<br />

· Provide building modularity to cater for extension (although it would be also an option to<br />

build a separate store for decomissioning wastes).<br />

An ILW Interim Store to:<br />

· Store all ILW generated by reactor operations for up to 100 years after first fuel loading;<br />

· Provide building modularity to cater for extension and cater for decommissioning ILW<br />

(although it would be also an option to build a separate store for decomissioning<br />

wastes);
