The Al Jazeera website was also under relentless cyberattack from <strong>the</strong> onset<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upris<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

“The regime did everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y could to make th<strong>in</strong>gs difficult for us,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y did not succeed,” said Souag. “We still had <strong>the</strong> most comprehensive<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> events <strong>in</strong> Egypt.”<br />

After <strong>the</strong> first few days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upris<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> Egyptian state media began<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>sidious propaganda campaign <strong>in</strong> an apparent effort to terrorize<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary Egyptians <strong>in</strong>to stay<strong>in</strong>g at home and <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> streets. Channel<br />

thugs try<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>filtrate <strong>the</strong> protests and later broadcast live phone-<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

which members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public compla<strong>in</strong>ed about loot<strong>in</strong>g and disorder. It’s<br />

hard to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> a better way to <strong>in</strong>cite panic <strong>in</strong> a jittery population, especially<br />

because <strong>the</strong>re had been no emergency services <strong>in</strong> Egypt for days. By <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>the</strong>se garbled and unsubstantiated stories passed through <strong>the</strong> Egyptian<br />

rumor mill, ord<strong>in</strong>ary people would be forgiven for th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>World</strong> War<br />

journalists with a “hidden agenda” and accused Al Jazeera <strong>of</strong> “<strong>in</strong>cit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

people.” One supposed “foreign agent” was shown on Egyptian state TV<br />

with face obscured, claim<strong>in</strong>g that she had been tra<strong>in</strong>ed by “Americans and<br />

Israelis” <strong>in</strong> Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> lid on Pandora’s box has been prized open, and undemocratic regimes<br />

across <strong>the</strong> region are now look<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong>ir shoulder at Al Jazeera—<br />

for history shows that where Egypt goes, o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Arab</strong> countries soon follow.<br />

Given Al Jazeera’s enormous <strong>in</strong>fluence on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arab</strong> street and its electrify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

message that <strong>Arab</strong> dictatorships are, <strong>in</strong> fact, mortal, it is no wonder dictators<br />

and despots across <strong>the</strong> region have been left feel<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>the</strong>r rattled. There<br />

have already been h<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>surrection’s ripples <strong>in</strong> Algeria, Jordan, Yemen,<br />

and Bahra<strong>in</strong>. Could Al Jazeera threaten even Saudi <strong>Arab</strong>ia<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g revolution to Egypt and Tunisia is one th<strong>in</strong>g; foment<strong>in</strong>g<br />

upris<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian Gulf is quite ano<strong>the</strong>r. But <strong>the</strong> situation is delicate<br />

<strong>in</strong> Saudi <strong>Arab</strong>ia, where <strong>the</strong> regime is wobbl<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> cusp <strong>of</strong> change. The<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom ei<strong>the</strong>r directly or <strong>in</strong>directly controls most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arab</strong> media, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Al Jazeera’s pr<strong>in</strong>cipal rival Al <strong>Arab</strong>iya, but it rema<strong>in</strong>s highly vulnerable<br />

to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> palpitations Al Jazeera could easily provoke.<br />

And that’s where Al Jazeera’s home country <strong>of</strong> Qatar comes <strong>in</strong>. Qatar cer-<br />
