SYS.0020 SYS.0021 (See also CFIs in chapter 12) GDS (version 1, revision 1.1; 7 Jan 2004) 1.0 Introduction 17 GDS-001 The primary aim of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature NASR Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP) is to develop and operate an operational demonstration system that will deliver high-resolution (better than 10 km and ~24 hours) global coverage SST data products for the diverse needs of GODAE and the wider scientific community. A new generation of SST data products will be derived and served to the user community by combining complementary satellite and in situ SST observations in near real time. A full description of the GHRSST-PP project is given in the GHRSST-PP Development and Implementation Plan (GDIP) which can be obtained from the GHRSST-PP project web server located at http://www.ghrsst-pp.org. 17 GDS-002 Figure 1.1 provides a simplified schematic overview of the GDIP. The GHRSST-PP is based on a distributed system in NASR which the data processing operations that are necessary to operationally generate and distribute high resolution SST data sets having global coverage are shared by Regional Data Assembly Centres (RDAC). RDAC ingest, quality control and merge existing satellite and in situ SST data sources that are then used together to generate regional coverage quality controlled SST data products to the same specification (called L2P products), in real-time. RDAC data products are then assembled together at Global Data Analysis Centres (GDAC) where they are integrated and analysed to provide L4 global coverage data products. © 2004 SOC Page 112 of 193

Reference ID Text from reference documents 18 GDS-003 Each RDAC implements a processing system described in the GDS within a regionally funded project that is common to all SR entry NASR RDAC. Five GHRSST-PP RDAC projects are currently in preparation and are fully described in the GDIP. These are: 18 GDS-004 1. The New Generations SST project (NGSST) serving the western Pacific area replaced by a approximately defined by NASR the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS, now replaced by GOES-9) footprint. The NGSST project is based in Japan. 18 GDS-005 2. The European Medspiration Project (MSP) serving the Atlantic area and European shelf seas. SYS.0010 18 GDS-006 3. The Ocean Forecasting Australia (OFA) BlueLink project serving the regional needs of the Australian region. NASR 18 GDS-007 4. The Survey of the Environment Assisted by Satellite (SEASnet) program of the IDD serving the tropical oceans. The NASR SEASnet project is based in France. 18 GDS-008 5. A project serving the SST needs of the USA under the US National Ocean Partnership Program (NOPP) under the NASR general title of ‘SST for GODAE’. 18 1 GDS-009 A GDAC centre is currently in preparation that will be implemented as a joint system by the Jet propulsion Laboratory NASR Physical Oceanography Data Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) and the US-GODAE data server system at Monterey (http://www.usgodae.org). 18 4 GDS-010 The PO.DAAC will be responsible for the data management of the GDAC including metadata, data serving and user NASR interactions and US-GODAE will be responsible for the archive of GHRSST-PP data sets and the production of a global analysed SST fields initially using the US-Navy system. 18 7 GDS-011 The USGODAE server is dedicated to serving large data sets to operational ocean models. In addition, the extensive NASR experience and capability of the PO.DAAC will ensure that GHRSST-PP scientific users are provided with excellent support, documentation and data access. 18 GDS-012 In parallel, a second backup GDAC will be developed as part of the European Marine Environment and Security in the SYS.0010 European Area (MERSEA) initiative (see http://www.ifremer.fr/merseaip/objectives.htm).The EU RDAC project © 2004 SOC Page 113 of 193
