• Entries to the GHRSST-PP diagnostic data set (DDS) will be compiled by extracting,
and resampling onto a 0.01º grid, full resolution sub scenes for a set of predefined
small areas (typically 2º × 2º) from every L2P SST and L4 dataset generated by the
Medspiration processor. The DDS sites are defined by GHRSST-PP. The purpose
of the DDS is to allow intercomparison of the characteristics of the SST derived from
different sensor types, in order to facilitate the research needed to test and improve
the data merging methods used in GHRSST-PP.
2.2 Overall structure of the Medspiration Processing System
Figure 2-4 outlines schematically the main processing tasks required to produce the four
types of SST products described in 2.1.2. The figure shows the main classes of inputs
and outputs, and assigns distinct processing stages to different boxes. The whole
system is distributed across the facilities of three contractors, CMS, Ifremer and SOC, as
indicated in the figure.
The underlying data flow through the system is basically simple. Level 2 SST data
products generated from different sensors and produced by the mission ground segment
or agency responsible for each are obtained by Internet and ingested into the first main
processing centre. This is hosted in CMS where use will be made of the fact that CMS is
already an operational provider of processed AVHRR data, which is a key SST input
stream for the L2P product. Consequently one of the major sources of input data will be
provided internally. At the same time the CMS processing facility will ingest auxiliary
satellite data, such as wind speed, needed for the quality assessment. The SSES,
reference data fields and any other necessary information will be supplied by the
