System Requirements Document
Issue F
GHRSST-PP International project office (IPO) so that quality values can be assigned to
each ingested data point, applying the rules set out by the GHRSST data processing
plan, and the new L2P dataset can be generated with the quality flags attached. This
completes the involvement of CMS.
As soon as each L2P data set is generated in near real time the products are pushed to
the core processing centre. This is at IFREMER, where use will also be made of existing
operational capability in processing, archiving and distributing satellite data. The
IFREMER computing facility will support a number of tasks. First is the onward
dissemination of the L2P data to GHRSST and to any operational users requiring them.
Second is the archiving of the L2P data. Third is the use of the L2P data in the
production of the level four interpolated products, using an OI scheme configured to
match the local variability statistics for the region in question. The resulting L4 products
for the Mediterranean Sea will then be disseminated to users and also placed in the
Medspiration archive.
The L4 processor is required to accomplish two processes whose detailed specification
by the user (GHRSST-PP) is still under review. These are the conversion of the L2P
data from skin and subskin to foundation temperature, and the subsequent optimal
interpolation that merges SST data from all sources to generate the L4 SST product. The
system requirements for the L4 processor must be defined in such a way that there is no
uncertainty attached to the design of the fundamental functional architecture, and that
any remaining uncertainties in the user specification are confined to the content of
configuration files.
The fourth module in the IFREMER facility is the use of the L2P data to generate entries
for the GHRSST-PP match-up data base (MDB). IFREMER is well placed to handle the
extraction of satellite data from the L2P inputs that are collocated with in situ
observations of SST to form the MDB records. That is because the focal point for the
collection, processing, dissemination and archiving of many of Europe’s operational
measurements of SST from buoys and other platforms is already based at IFREMER in
the CORIOLIS project.
