3.2 Explain the importance <strong>of</strong> family planning and a small family size<br />
Resources: A4 paper (one per student), Two questions on board or butcher paper<br />
a. Introduction: (20 mins)<br />
In groups <strong>of</strong> 4 ask students <strong>to</strong> discuss this question:<br />
“Why is it important <strong>to</strong> have a small family”<br />
Hear feedback and discuss the possible reasons:<br />
E.g. Reduce pressure on land and resources, more money for school fees, healthier<br />
well fed children, less pressure on the married couple<br />
Q: Are there any reasons for people <strong>to</strong> have larger families<br />
b. Main Activity: (35 mins)<br />
Individual students design a simple flow chart showing the main steps <strong>of</strong> conception,<br />
pregnancy and birth on A4 paper. Display these.<br />
c. Conclusion: (5 mins)<br />
Ask students <strong>to</strong> answer this question with a partner.<br />
“How should we support and care for pregnant mothers”<br />
Ask students <strong>to</strong> interview a pregnant mother in their community/school. What does<br />
she feel How does she stay healthy Ask them <strong>to</strong> read the information about family<br />
planning methods in their Resource Book.<br />
