Students will demonstrate the correct use <strong>of</strong> a male and a female condom <strong>to</strong> a small group (4-6)<br />

<strong>of</strong> same sex peers. They will state accurate facts and correct common misconceptions about<br />

condoms. They will stress safer sex messages and abstinence/saying no/resisting pressure<br />

strategies. They will be observed and assessed by the lecturer.<br />

Value: This assignment is worth 12% <strong>of</strong> the overall course marks<br />

Length: One 15 minute demonstration<br />

Assessment criteria:<br />

1. Accurate facts about condoms: when used properly 95-98%<br />

effective in prevention transmission on <strong>HIV</strong>, also prevents STI<br />

and unwanted pregnancy, free from clinics and Provincial <strong>AIDS</strong><br />

Committees, part <strong>of</strong> the Government’s <strong>HIV</strong> strategy, research<br />

shows they do not encourage promiscuity, we need <strong>to</strong> resist<br />

pressure <strong>to</strong> have unsafe sex which puts us at risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong><br />

2. Correct demonstration <strong>of</strong> male condom using a wooden<br />

penis or banana/carrot: Include these points…<br />

• Do you and your partner really want sex If either is<br />

unsure or uncomfortable – NO! Abstinence is 100% safe.<br />

A man must wear the condom before entering the<br />

woman’s vagina<br />

• Check the expiry date on the packet<br />

• Squeeze the condom <strong>to</strong> one side in the packet<br />

• Tear from the serrated edge<br />

• Pinch the tip and carefully unroll the condom down the<br />

erect penis (be careful it is the right way around!)<br />

• Have sex – some couples use water based lubricant<br />

• After the man ejaculates he must withdraw straight away<br />

before he loses his erection<br />

• Tie a knot in the condom so it can’t be used again<br />

• Throw the condom and wrapper away in a sensible place<br />

– wrapped in plastic bag in the bin, thrown in the pit<br />

latrine, NOT flushed down the Western <strong>to</strong>ilet<br />

3. Correct demonstration <strong>of</strong> female condom using a wooden<br />

penis or banana/carrot: Include these points…<br />
