4.3 Explain the importance <strong>of</strong> equal roles and opportunities for women, girls,<br />

boys and men<br />

a. Introduction: (5 mins)<br />

Say, “One <strong>of</strong> the root causes <strong>of</strong> ill health and the spread <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> and <strong>STIs</strong> is<br />

inequality between men and women, boys and girls. The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

has a Gender Equity Policy – we want more girls and young women in school <strong>to</strong> help<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> PNG.”<br />

b. Main Activity: (50 mins)<br />

Divide the class in<strong>to</strong> groups <strong>of</strong> 4. Give each group a family member: mother, father,<br />

teenage daughter, teenage son, boy, girl, grandmother, grandfather. Each group<br />

should plot the activities their person would do during a normal day.<br />

Then ask the groups <strong>to</strong> present their findings and compare them.<br />

Q: When the father is sick who will do his work<br />

Q: What happens if the mother gets sick for 1 week<br />

Q: When the daughter comes home late what happens<br />

Q: What happens if the son comes home late<br />

Q: If there is not enough food in the house, who eats first<br />

Q And who eats last Why<br />

Q: What happens if both parents are sick with <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong><br />
