Role play 2<br />

Your are in a classroom one evening with another class mate studying. After finishing<br />

the homework they sit close <strong>to</strong> you. You feel uncomfortable. They seem <strong>to</strong> want <strong>to</strong><br />

kiss you. Negotiate with your friend.<br />

Role play 3<br />

You want <strong>to</strong> start a relationship with someone you are attracted <strong>to</strong>. They are keen <strong>to</strong><br />

be serious straight away and start <strong>to</strong> kiss you and <strong>to</strong>uch you. You are not comfortable<br />

– you want <strong>to</strong> know them better. Negotiate with them.<br />

Role play 4<br />

A friend gets drunk and breaks your CD player in the dorm. They apologise the next<br />

day but you want them <strong>to</strong> compensate you for it. Negotiate this.<br />

Role play 5<br />

Your older family member wants you <strong>to</strong> meet them in <strong>to</strong>wn. They are the opposite<br />

sex and this is a strange request. However they have helped with school fees.<br />

Negotiate a meeting which will be safe for you.<br />

Role play 6<br />

Your friend keeps <strong>of</strong>fering you marijuana <strong>to</strong> smoke. You don’t want <strong>to</strong> smoke.<br />

Negotiate how <strong>to</strong> refuse.<br />

Explain that negotiation:<br />

• Is bargaining <strong>to</strong> reach an agreement;<br />

• Is a dynamic process;<br />

• Involves discussion and communication.<br />

In negotiating a situation, identify:<br />

• What is it you want; and<br />

• What your bot<strong>to</strong>m line is<br />

Know that:<br />

• Only behaviours can be negotiated, not a difference in values.<br />

Ask students <strong>to</strong> read the steps <strong>to</strong> delivering an assertive message in the Resource<br />

Book for next lesson.<br />
