a. Introduction (20 mins) Quiz<br />

Put the participants in pairs. Give them scrap paper <strong>to</strong> use. Ask them these 8 quiz<br />

questions.<br />

i) <strong>HIV</strong> and <strong>AIDS</strong> are the same thing. True or false<br />

ii) What do the letters H and I and V stand for<br />

iii) What do the letters A and I and D and S stand for<br />

iv) Which four body fluids can transmit <strong>HIV</strong><br />

v) People are infected by <strong>HIV</strong> in three ways. What are these three modes <strong>of</strong><br />

transmission<br />

vi) List three things you can do which do not have any risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong> transmission.<br />

vii) Most people with <strong>HIV</strong> in PNG do not know they are infected. True or false<br />

viii) Where did <strong>HIV</strong> come from<br />

3) Once they have completed the test, they can self mark. Here are the answers. Use<br />

them <strong>to</strong> explain key information about the virus. Refer them <strong>to</strong> the Resource Book<br />

and the Question Wall if they have questions.<br />

i) <strong>HIV</strong> and <strong>AIDS</strong> are the same thing. True or false<br />

False. <strong>HIV</strong> is the germ (a virus) that causes <strong>AIDS</strong>. <strong>AIDS</strong> when <strong>HIV</strong> has damaged<br />

your immune system so other diseases can attack your body (like pneumonia,<br />

diarrhoea and TB). You can be <strong>HIV</strong> positive for a long time and look healthy. Only<br />

when your immune system fails are you said <strong>to</strong> have <strong>AIDS</strong>.<br />

ii) What do the letters H and I and V stand for<br />

Human Immunodeficiency Virus – a natural virus that infects humans and attacks<br />

and destroys their immune system.<br />

iii) What do the letters A and I and D and S stand for<br />

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome – a collection <strong>of</strong> illnesses and diseases that<br />

you get when your immune system is damaged by <strong>HIV</strong><br />

iv) Which four body fluids can transmit <strong>HIV</strong><br />
