3.5 Explain the most suitable time <strong>to</strong> become a parent<br />

Resources:<br />

a. Introduction: (15 mins)<br />

Ask students <strong>to</strong> work in pairs <strong>to</strong> list their 10 Top Tips for when <strong>to</strong> become a parent.<br />

E.g. 1) When you have completed your education<br />

2) When you have a strong faithful marriage<br />

Etc.<br />

Ask groups <strong>to</strong> read out their Top Tips<br />

b. Main Activity: (20 mins)<br />

Ask students <strong>to</strong> complete the Self Study task for parenthood in the Resource Book.<br />

Self study: Would you make a good parent Assess yourself using the questions<br />

below:<br />

1. Have I had experience with children <strong>of</strong> all ages<br />

2. Do I have the patience <strong>to</strong> raise a child<br />

3. How do I handle anger Would I abuse my child if I lost my temper<br />

4. How do I like doing the things parents have <strong>to</strong> do<br />

5. Could I find happiness in teaching and guiding a child, a teenager, a young adult<br />

6. Would I expect my child <strong>to</strong> take care <strong>of</strong> me in my oId age<br />

7. Do I enjoy child-centred activities Could I play with and teach my child<br />

8. Am I financially able <strong>to</strong> support a child<br />

9. Would a child interfere with my freedom, my work or educational plans<br />

10. Would I be willing <strong>to</strong> devote a large part <strong>of</strong> 18 years <strong>of</strong> my life <strong>to</strong> being a parent<br />

11. Could I accept and love a child who was born disabled<br />

12. Do I really want a child Am I under pressure<br />

13. Would my partner make a good parent<br />

14. Would my family support us<br />

Then ask them <strong>to</strong> discuss this question in groups <strong>of</strong> 4.<br />

“What is the suitable age for someone <strong>to</strong> become a parent”<br />

Hear feedback from the groups.<br />

c. Conclusion: (15 mins)<br />

Say, “Having children and getting married is a huge responsibility and should be a<br />

wonderful experience – it will change your life completely.”<br />

Finally, read these statements <strong>to</strong> students and ask them <strong>to</strong> either agree or disagree<br />

by telling their classmate.<br />
