which is quite pesky. And, again, the international
piece of it needs to happen, not just response from only
one side. So if we can figure that out, that would be
great. Thanks.
SARAH HANSON: I would like to know what
evidence there is that supports the actual numbers of job
creation being higher with this than if we allocate
resources toward environmental stewardship jobs, farm and
agricultural conservation and preservation, and
JANA MARKS: My name is Jana Marks. I moved
to San Juan County 36 years ago to raise my family in a
remote outer island setting on Stewart Island.
We lived without a telephone or electricity and had
a boat to come to market instead of a car. For 15 years
we crossed from Roche to Stewart to the Roche Harbor area
to access services and the outer world.
We watched salmon race into the reef nets outside
Reed Harbor, and the orcas pass by our south-facing
waterfront almost every day in the summer.
Our view was directly down Haro Straight, so we also
watched a steady stream of cargo ships heading north or
south. At night when you didn't see the ships, you heard
them rumbling, some clanging as they endlessly chugged
