350 volunteer hours with the oil spill group. I went
down to the Gulf and worked for a month taking
collections of oil and wildlife.
And so my comments are I hope that the state and
federal agencies will really do a very good assessment on
the environmental damage because this is a ludicrous
thing to do in a sensitive area. I've got experience in
knowing what can happen in emergency situations.
I ask that the agencies, if they do allow this
project, which I hope they don't, but if they do allow
this project to come into fruition, I ask that the
agencies insist that these super tankers are double
hulled. I ask that they insist that the super tankers
have a tug escort both in and out.
And I also ask that they insist that there be
emergency contingencies, not just giving verbal mouth to
it, but training people on both sides, Canada and U.S.,
from the mainland as well as on our islands to have
stations set up for emergencies and train people so that
they already know where they're to go and what they're to
do because emergencies will happen.
I also wish that they would train people and have
rehab places set up so that the wildlife will -- because
it takes a while to set up rehab places, so we already
need to have those people trained and those rehab
