4 These huge ships all carry several hundred thousand<br />

5 gallons of what is called bunker sea or residual fuel<br />

6 oil. The chances of a major oil spill in <strong>the</strong>se confined<br />

7 and clouded waters with fast currents and deep waters is<br />

8 inevitable.<br />

9 I ask you to investigate <strong>the</strong> accident records of<br />

10 <strong>the</strong>se two categories of ships versus American, Japanese<br />

11 and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn European-run ships with <strong>the</strong> idea that third<br />

12 world and runaway flag ships not be allowed to operate in<br />

13 this trade due to <strong>the</strong> potentially hazardous risks to<br />

14 Puget Sound. Thank you.<br />

15 LINDA HUDSON: I'm President of Keepers of<br />

16 <strong>the</strong> Patos Light, and we are a nonprofit. And what we do<br />

17 is open <strong>the</strong> lighthouse to <strong>the</strong> public, and we maintain <strong>the</strong><br />

18 beaches and trails of Patos Island, and we're a group of<br />

19 100 people. When we're on Patos Island, we look straight<br />

20 over to Cherry Point.<br />

21 What my concern is, is coal dust. It's certainly --<br />

22 as portrayed to me in my reading, it looks like coal dust<br />

23 will be generated in <strong>the</strong> area, and Patos Island has<br />

24 old-growth <strong>for</strong>est.<br />

25 It has rare and unusual flora and fauna, some of<br />
