Activity 5.3 Conflict, Mediation, andTransformation: Self Analysis & AwarenessTime: 45-60 minutesMaterials:Flip-chartCardsObjectives:Build shared understandings of the meanings of the termsconflict, mediation, and transformationHighlight the difference between mediation leading totransformation (and thus a sustainable resolution) versusmediation leading to a short-term or temporary solution119Procedure:1. Elicit from participants what types of conflict they arefamiliar with and list them onto flip chart paper.2. The range of ‘conflicts’ should reveal those of a personalnature, e.g. parent/child, partners/spouses; internalwork related conflicts between e.g. employee/boss,colleagues; external work related conflicts, for examplebetween implementing agency/donor agency,implementing agency/end beneficiaries; up to andincluding -national/regional/international conflicts of apolitical/economic nature.3. In assessing the range of conflicts presented it is to benoted that we are dealing with a potential source ofconflict every day- at home and/or at work and that‘conflict’ is not only defined as a situation with national/regional/international consequences i.e. a revolution, aninvasion, a war etc. The point being made here is that
120maybe without even realizing or acknowledging it, we all have our ownstrategies for dealing with conflicts. This leads to the next part of theactivity on mediation and transformation.4. Divide the participants into 5 groups and assign each group one of thelisted conflict categories. For example (1) Personal- family, (2) InternalWork- boss, (3) Internal work- colleagues, (4) External work- donoragency, (5) External work- End beneficiaries.5. Each group is directed to consider mediation strategies they use in eachcase. In the report-back stage list the strategies mentioned.6. Now pose the question whether these strategies only result in atemporary solution to the conflict or will they address the root causes ofthe source of conflict?7. In the ensuing discussion and wrap-up, highlight the fact thattransformation requires that the conflict must be tackled at its rootcause in order to achieve a lasting resolution. Any current outcome of aconflict can always be addressed but is likely to be on a temporary basisonly providing an immediate solution rather than a lasting resolution ifthe root of the problem is not dealt with. This is akin to ‘papering’ overthe conflict that will later reoccur because the conflict has not actuallybeen transformed.
