APPENDIX 5Post-16 benefits andeducation fundingPost-16 benefitsDisabled young people approaching adulthood are likely to need a review ofbenefits they may be entitled to. This is a complex area and often claimingone benefit or receiving one grant can affect either the combined familyincome or the young persons ability to work or attend college.Many agencies working with disabled young people do not offer advice andsupport on claiming benefits but it is important that staff working withdisabled young people and their families know of local agencies who canhelp. This can be particularly important <strong>for</strong> young people who have nonverbalcommunication, learning difficulties or who have English as a secondlanguage. Disabled young people and their families may be able to getsupport when applying <strong>for</strong> benefits from key workers, the adult social careteam or local welfare rights services.The most common benefits disabled young people may be eligible <strong>for</strong> arelisted below.Appendix 5Post-16 benefits and education fundingAppendix 5Incapacity BenefitThis benefit is currently under government review. It can be claimed whether the young person is at work orstudying on a full or part time basis (subject to the type of course thelearner wishes to pursue post 16 and whether the learner is on an advancedor non-advanced course). Disability Living <strong>All</strong>owance canalso lead to the ‘disability premium’ which increases the Income Support alearner can be paid and means that they can get Income Support as a fulltimestudent.
