Newcastle: Young Disabled People’s ProjectThe grant-funded Young Disabled People’s Project delivers aprogramme of leisure activities <strong>for</strong> disabled young people. Theprogramme, which is part of Disability North in Newcastle,includes swimming, trampolining, basketball, five-a-side, bowlingskills development and friendship.NorthumberlandFollowing consultation with young disabled people,Northumberland Children’s Fund and Northumberland Sportbegan work together to lower the barriers that prevent disabledchildren accessing sports activities. <strong>All</strong> disabled children and theirfamilies in Northumberland are entitled to Max Cards <strong>for</strong> free orreduced admission to historical and cultural places of interest.Leisure service providers and district councils have agreed MaxCard holders will also be entitled to reduced-cost activities inleisure centres.At Treloar College, the occupational therapist works with youngpeople to look at how they can use standard equipment availablein all public gyms and leisure centres. So, rather than relying onspecialist equipment at the college, the young people can prepare<strong>for</strong> life after college when they will be living independently in thecommunity with no special equipment at hand.Further examples of effective practice are available fromwww.transitioninfonetwork.org.ukQuality standards checklistsInvolving local play and leisure providers in local authority planning <strong>for</strong>transition support can help them better understand the needs of disabledyoung people and plan to meet them effectively.
