CALTRAIN EXTENSION TO MONTEREY COUNTYALTERNATIVES ANALYSISALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS STUDY PROCESSThe proposed project is the outgrowth of a detailed analysis of alternatives conducted over a periodof five years (2002–2007). The process followed by the alternatives analysis is consistent withguidance provided by the Federal Transit Administration and is shown graphically below. To addressthese travel markets, eight alternatives were identified as depicted in Figure 9-3. These alternativeswere conceptually defined as insofar as fixed guideway alignments, station locations, servicecharacteristics and capital costs.Figure 9-2Locally Preferred Alternative Selection ProcessUniverse of AlternativesInitial ScreeningConceptual AlternativesSecondary EvaluationDetailed AlternativesDetailed AnalysisFinalAlternative (locally preferredalternative)EVALUATION OF CONCEPTUAL ALTERNATIVESAs a result of the public involvement and policy review process, four alternatives emerged for furtherrefinement and testing.
