Steckol, ChairpersonOffi ce: 7 Rowand-Johnson Hall<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Communicative Disorders <strong>of</strong>fers a graduate program leading tothe master <strong>of</strong> science degree in speech-language pathology. <strong>The</strong> program is accreditedby the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.<strong>The</strong> program combines coursework, observation, and practicums to familiarize stu dentswith communicative disorders and to develop their skills in assessment and rehabilitation.Most students with undergraduate degrees in communicative disorders will completethe degree re quire ments in fi ve semesters <strong>of</strong> full-time study. Students who completethe master’s degree will also have met the academic and practicum re quire ments forthe Certifi cate <strong>of</strong> Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-HearingAs so ci a tion and for a license from the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se credentials enable graduatesto be employed in clinical settings as well as in the public schools <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> andmany other states, depending upon their certifi cation requirements.Practicum sites include UA’s Speech and Hearing Center, public schools, DCH RegionalMedical Center, Capstone Medical Center, West <strong>Alabama</strong> Re ha bil i ta tion Center, BryceHos pi tal, RISE Program, VA Medical Centers in Tuscaloosa and Bir ming ham, and other sitesin the Birmingham area. Certified and/or licensed pro fes sion als su per vise at all sites.Admission RequirementsApplicants must submit scores on the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examination general test orthe Miller Analogies Test.
