340 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>SPE 538 Research Seminar. One hour.Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.This seminar will acquaint students with rel e vant areas <strong>of</strong> re search in general and specialeducation. It pro vides a scaffolded approach to the development <strong>of</strong> a research pro pos althat will be required in the fi fth semester <strong>of</strong> MAP. At ten tion is given to se lect ing problemareas for investigation by re view ing historical, de scrip tive, and ex per i men tal methods<strong>of</strong> re search. Students will read a variety <strong>of</strong> research articles and learn to identify anap pro pri ate question for various types <strong>of</strong> inquiry. <strong>The</strong>y will study the types <strong>of</strong> data thatshould be collected, the types <strong>of</strong> analyses typ i cal ly done with such data, and how tore late their study’s fi ndings to the question for which the study was undertaken.SPE 550 Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism. Two hours.Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.<strong>The</strong> major activity <strong>of</strong> the semester consists <strong>of</strong> a 12-week in tern ship in a special educationclassroom. Pro fes sion al discourse, dress, ethics, and decision making receiveintensive scrutiny.SPE 554 <strong>The</strong> Learner. Two hours.Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.<strong>The</strong> major activity <strong>of</strong> the semester consists <strong>of</strong> a 12-week in tern ship in a special educationclassroom. Stu dents will gradually as sume more and more <strong>of</strong> the responsibility forplanning and teach ing in responsive, developmentally ap pro pri ate ways that supportthe learning <strong>of</strong> ALL the children in the class room, cul mi nat ing in a 2-week “solo” teachingepisode.SPE 556 Communication and Collaboration. Two hours.Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.<strong>The</strong> major activity <strong>of</strong> the semester consists <strong>of</strong> a 12-week in tern ship in a special educationclassroom. Stu dents will continue to develop and be evaluated on the com mu ni ca tionand col lab o ra tion abilities they have developed in previous MAP coursework.SPE 557 Facilitating Learning. Two hours.Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.<strong>The</strong> major activity <strong>of</strong> the semester consists <strong>of</strong> a 12-week in tern ship in a special educationclassroom. Stu dents will produce a case study <strong>of</strong> one struggling learner, in clud ingan analysis <strong>of</strong> the stu dent’s social and academic environment, an IEP, and lesson plansfrom the previous se mes ter’s integrated unit that show how they would be modifi ed tomeet the student’s ac a dem ic and social needs.SPE 558 Field Experience. Three hours.Prerequisites: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better.<strong>The</strong> major activity <strong>of</strong> the semester consists <strong>of</strong> a 12-week internship in a specialeducation classroom.SPE 560 Research Seminar. One hour.Prerequisites: Completion <strong>of</strong> all previous MAP coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong> “B” orbetter.In this course, students will design and im ple ment action re search in the special educationclassroom in which they are com plet ing their internship. Students will develop aninstructional or behavioral intervention, design and implement an action re search validationstudy, collect data, analyze it, and write up their research in APA style. Students willthen prepare an oral pre sen ta tion <strong>of</strong> their research for the MAP Differentiated InstructionCon fer ence. <strong>The</strong> action research resulting from this seminar will be used as a form <strong>of</strong>master’s thesis in lieu <strong>of</strong> a master’s com pre hen sive examination.
