408 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>detailed up-to-date knowledge <strong>of</strong> the subject matter. A student seeking eligibility to takethe national examination to become a registered dietitian may apply for admission tothe co or di nat ed program in dietetics.Students specializing in human nutrition and hospitality management must completeNHM 560, NHM 561, NHM 562, and 9 hours <strong>of</strong> electives <strong>of</strong>fered in the department. Inaddition, students must attend NHM 595 Seminar in Nutrition and Food during eachsemester they enroll for 6 or more hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credit.<strong>The</strong> thesis for the human nutrition and hospitality management specialization shouldfocus on current nutritional concerns in which the student has a special interest. Studentsalso have opportunities to participate in research with faculty members. Examples<strong>of</strong> faculty research include obesity and dieting practices, maternal and infant nutrition,healthy eating patterns, nutrition education and service delivery, and nutrient analysis<strong>of</strong> foods.<strong>The</strong> program in human nutrition participates in the <strong>University</strong> Scholars Program.Qualifi ed students begin graduate study in the senior year. This program leads to thecompletion <strong>of</strong> requirements for both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. A studentwho wishes to exercise this option will normally apply to Phase 1 <strong>of</strong> the program in thesophomore year; however, students may apply directly to Phase 2 <strong>of</strong> the program atthe end <strong>of</strong> the junior year. Procedures are detailed in the “Academic Policies” section<strong>of</strong> this catalog.Students applying for admission to the specialization in human nutrition refer to there quire ments for admission detailed in an earlier section <strong>of</strong> this catalog. A student with acumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0, a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 in the last 60 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework,or a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 in a master’s degree program is not required to submit standardizedtest scores.GRADUATE PROGRAM LEADING TO THE MASTER OFARTS AND DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREESHealth studies. <strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health Science <strong>of</strong>fers the program in healthstudies leading to the master <strong>of</strong> arts degree. Students complete one <strong>of</strong> two con cen -tra tions: health promotion or sports medicine health care. <strong>Graduate</strong>s are trained toconduct needs as sess ments, develop in ter ven tion programs, and im ple ment healthpromotion pro grams in a variety <strong>of</strong> settings. <strong>The</strong> master’s degree program emphasizespro gram ming relative to adolescent health, minority health, community health, healthpromotion, disease prevention (worksite and hospital), and sports medicine health care.<strong>The</strong> degree may be pursued under Plan I (thesis) or Plan II (nonthesis), as described onp. 406.A student applying for admission to the master <strong>of</strong> arts in health studies graduateprogram with a cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0, a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 in the last 60 hours<strong>of</strong> coursework, or a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 in a master’s degree program is not required to submitstandardized test scores.<strong>The</strong> concentration in sports medicine health care has received approval to participatein the <strong>University</strong> Scholars Program. Candidates are supervised under a mentoring model thatmatches students with program faculty in areas <strong>of</strong> their research interests within the fi eld<strong>of</strong> health education and health promotion. <strong>The</strong> degree program is <strong>of</strong>fered jointly by threeprograms located in the College <strong>of</strong> Human Environmental Sciences at <strong>The</strong> Uni ver si ty <strong>of</strong><strong>Alabama</strong>, the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Public Health at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> at Birmingham (UAB),and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Education at UAB.
