Courses in these programs are designedto provide students with technical, interpersonal, and con cep tu al skills es sen tialto theory and practice.Degrees <strong>of</strong>fered by the programs include the M.A. and the Ed.S. in educational leadership,the Ed.D. and the Ph.D. in educational administration, and the Ed.D. and Ph.D. ininstructional leadership. In addition, study options are available to provide eligibility forboth Class A and Class AA certifi cation application. Admission and de gree re quire mentsfor the Grad u ate <strong>School</strong> and for the College <strong>of</strong> Education are detailed in an earlier section<strong>of</strong> this catalog.All these programs <strong>of</strong> study are based on a cohort approach to instruction. Cohorts areestablished annually for June admission. Applications to each degree and/or certifi cationprogram should be submitted to the program in educational leadership in January toassure consideration for that year’s cohort. Admission forms and requirements, specifi cprogram parameters, and departmental policies are available through the <strong>of</strong>fi ce <strong>of</strong> thede part men tal chair.<strong>The</strong> program in instructional leadership provides learning opportunities for educatorswho hold or aspire to leadership responsibilities for planning, implementing, and evaluatingprograms in schools and other agencies. Courses in the program are designed toprovide the technical, human, and conceptual skills essential to theory and practice.<strong>The</strong> staff-development component is concerned with promoting human relationshipskills among educators and laypersons who have responsibilities for programs,and with in creas ing the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the teaching-learning process. <strong>The</strong> programdevelopmentcomponent is concerned with schools, school change, and curriculum asa fi eld <strong>of</strong> study.<strong>The</strong> program in instructional leadership <strong>of</strong>fers the doctor <strong>of</strong> education and the doctor<strong>of</strong> philosophy degree in instructional leadership. <strong>The</strong> program provides a doctoral minorin staff development and supervision, a doctoral minor in curriculum and schooling, anda doctoral minor in policy and politics <strong>of</strong> education.Students interested in a supervisory position must have earned Class A pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcertifi cation in principalship or other appropriate fi eld prior to enrolling in the educationallead er ship program, or by obtaining a master’s degree in educational leadership afterteaching with a Class B teaching certifi cate. By obtaining the educational leadershipcertifi cate along with appropriate ed u ca tion al experience, the student may be certifi edto be a principal, supervisor, and/or su per in ten dent.Students who earned initial credit toward Class AA pr<strong>of</strong>essional certifi cation duringthe fall semester <strong>of</strong> 1992 or later must enroll in and complete the Ed.S. degree program.Courses used to qualify for a lower-level supporting certifi cate may not be used againin a higher-level certifi cation program.
