184 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>SCHOOL OF MUSIC (MUS)Offi ce: 175 Moody Music Bldg.<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Music is an accredited member <strong>of</strong> the National As so ci a tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>School</strong>s<strong>of</strong> Music, and all <strong>of</strong> its programs and policies are in ac cor dance with NASM requirements.<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers the doctor <strong>of</strong> musical arts degree (D.M.A.) with concentrationsin composition, performance, choral conducting, and wind conducting. A minor inmu si col o gy/ethnomusicology or music theory may be earned in conjunction with any <strong>of</strong>the D.M.A. concentrations. Descriptions <strong>of</strong> these curricula may be found in the <strong>Graduate</strong>Handbook <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Music. <strong>The</strong> master <strong>of</strong> music (M.M.) degree is <strong>of</strong>fered withconcentrations in per for mance, com po si tion, musicology/ethnomusicology, theory, cho ralcon duct ing, wind conducting, and organ performance and choral con duct ing com bined.Program outlines are available from the <strong>School</strong> upon request.<strong>The</strong> master <strong>of</strong> arts (M.A.) degree and the doctor <strong>of</strong> education (Ed.D.) degree are<strong>of</strong>fered in music education. Information concerning these degrees will be found in thiscatalog in the College <strong>of</strong> Education section.Requirements for AdmissionAll courses <strong>of</strong> graduate music study must meet the general requirements <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> as given in this catalog. In addition, the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Music imposes thefollowing special requirements:For the M.M. Degree1. <strong>The</strong> bachelor <strong>of</strong> music degree in the chosen fi eld <strong>of</strong> study from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Alabama</strong> or the equivalent from another accredited institution.2. In special cases, a student holding the bachelor’s degree but without a formal majorin the chosen fi eld may be admitted by examination.3. All students must take examinations in music history and music theory prior to initialregistration. Any deficiencies revealed in these examinations must be removed withinthe student’s fi rst 12 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate study. Until the defi ciencies are removed,no graduate study beyond the 12 hours may be undertaken, and enrollment ingraduate theory or history courses may be restricted. A schedule <strong>of</strong> remediationwill be determined by appropriate faculty and the director <strong>of</strong> graduate studies inmusic. <strong>The</strong> schedule may include enrollment in MUS 395 <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>The</strong>ory Reviewor MUS 396 <strong>Graduate</strong> History Review.4. Any deficiencies revealed by analysis <strong>of</strong> undergraduate transcripts prior to en roll mentmust be removed within one year <strong>of</strong> initial en roll ment.5. Information about the entrance examinations may be obtained from the director <strong>of</strong>graduate studies in music.Individual Area Requirements for the M.M. Degree1. Performance. An audition on the major instrument. A complete repertoire list mustbe submitted, noting those works prepared for the audition.Voice. <strong>The</strong> dem on stra tion <strong>of</strong> a satisfactory vocal technique in the classical styleand satisfactory singing diction in French, German, Italian and English.2. Composition. Submission <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> original works, including at least one inlarge form.3. <strong>The</strong>ory. Submission <strong>of</strong> examples <strong>of</strong> work that illustrate analytical and writing skills.Students must have a reading knowledge <strong>of</strong> a foreign language (usually German,French, or Italian). Those who do not have this skill at matriculation will be requiredto re move the defi ciency, through the completion <strong>of</strong> appropriate language coursesor by examination, before they are admitted to candidacy.4. Musicology/Ethnomusicology. Submission <strong>of</strong> work that illustrates research and writingskills. Students must have a reading knowledge <strong>of</strong> a foreign language (usuallyGerman, French, or Italian). Those who do not have this skill at matriculation will berequired to remove the defi ciency, through the completion <strong>of</strong> ap pro pri ate languagecourses or by ex am i na tion, before they are admitted to candidacy.
