Degree requirements are noted on the <strong>of</strong>fi cial program planningrecord for the various degrees/tracks. <strong>The</strong>se documents are available from thechair per son or administrative staff for the department.EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGYPr<strong>of</strong>essor Rodney RothOf fi ce: 315 Carmichael Hall<strong>The</strong> educational psychology program is designed to provide the highest-quality graduateeducation for exemplary pr<strong>of</strong>essional development in the fi eld <strong>of</strong> educational psychology.<strong>The</strong> program is ideal for individuals aspiring to develop expertise in theory, research,application, and practice related to learning, development, motivation, and refl ectiveproblem solving for functional well being <strong>of</strong> people <strong>of</strong> all ages. <strong>The</strong> student-centeredprogram views educational psychology not as a static body <strong>of</strong> pre-existing knowledge tobe internalized by the students, but as an evolving system <strong>of</strong> problems and solutions,a scientifi c system <strong>of</strong> problem solving, a living system <strong>of</strong> communication, and an ethicalsystem for personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct. Students are encouraged to uncovertheir own hidden potentials, interests, and strengths and to develop these maximallyby participating in all aspects <strong>of</strong> the program. <strong>The</strong> program invites applications from allpotential students, especially those in underrepresented populations.Four educational psychology degrees are <strong>of</strong>fered: M.A., Ed.S., Ed.D., and Ph.D. ineducational psychology. <strong>The</strong> M.A. has thesis and nonthesis options and a focus ongeneral educational psychology. <strong>The</strong>re is also an option for an M.A. focus on programevaluation (no thesis), in collaboration with the program in educational research. Ph.D.students may choose specializations in (a) learning, motivation, and instruction or (b)interdisciplinary educational science. <strong>The</strong> ed u ca tion al psy chol o gy program <strong>of</strong>fers a thirdspe cial iza tion in (c) human development, through a col lab o ra tive ar range ment withthe De part ment <strong>of</strong> Human De vel op ment and Family Studies in the College <strong>of</strong> HumanEnvironmental Sciences.<strong>The</strong> program <strong>of</strong>fers several options for doctoral minors for Ph.D. students in the College<strong>of</strong> Education and other divisions.Admission requirements. Statement <strong>of</strong> purpose and letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation consistent with goals <strong>of</strong> the program, scores above the 50th percentile on the GRE or MAT,and a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 on a 4.0 scale are needed for unconditional admission. Conditionaladmission will be granted in some cir cum stanc es. Prospective students are encouragedto complete their ap pli ca tions by January 15 for admission the following fall.Degree requirements. Master’s degrees require 30–33 graduate credit hours. Ed.S.degrees require 30–33 hours beyond the master’s. Doctoral degrees require 60 or morehours beyond the master’s.RESEARCH METHODOLOGYPr<strong>of</strong>essor Rodney W. A student may choose to specialize in educational sta tis tics, programeval u a tion, as sess ment/mea sure ment, research methodology, or qualitative research.Prac ti cal ex pe ri ence is a re quired part <strong>of</strong> the program. A doctoral minor is also <strong>of</strong>feredin educational research.
