428 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>• For conditional admission, a grade point av er age <strong>of</strong> at least 2.5 overall (based ona 4.0 system) for un der grad u ate work, and a score <strong>of</strong> at least 1000 on the Grad u ateRecord Ex am i na tion (GRE) general test or at least 50 on the Miller Analogies Test(MAT)Additional Requirements <strong>of</strong> All Applicants• baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited school <strong>of</strong> nursing• three letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation• verifi cation <strong>of</strong> the successful completion <strong>of</strong> an undergraduate course or equivalentin statistics, research• evidence <strong>of</strong> basic computer literacy• current RN licensure in the United States and eligibility for <strong>Alabama</strong> license• two years’ experience in nursing practice prior to beginning the programDegree Requirements<strong>The</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> master <strong>of</strong> science in nursing will be awarded to the student who hasmet the following requirements:• successful completion <strong>of</strong> the required 35 semester hours <strong>of</strong> coursework• GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or higher• good standing at the time <strong>of</strong> graduationTo fulfi ll the research requirements <strong>of</strong> the program, students may choose from twooptions described below: thesis option or nonthesis option.<strong>The</strong>sis option. A thesis is an original piece <strong>of</strong> research conducted by one student anddirected by the graduate committee. <strong>The</strong> student is awarded three semester hours <strong>of</strong>thesis research credit for a successfully completed thesis. An oral public defense <strong>of</strong> thethesis is required. <strong>The</strong> thesis must conform to the guidelines <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>.Nonthesis option. Nonthesis students participate in courses, seminars, or other facultydirectedexperiences that will give them an acquaintance with the methods <strong>of</strong> researchand an appreciation <strong>of</strong> the place and function <strong>of</strong> original investigation in the fi eld.Curriculum<strong>The</strong> master <strong>of</strong> science in nursing program can be completed in one year <strong>of</strong> full-timestudy or two or more years <strong>of</strong> part-time study.Students in the nursing program at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> who take specifi edcore courses at UAB or UAH — institutions cooperating in UA’s M.S.N. (nurse caseman age ment) program — may transfer the courses to UA even if the overall GPA atthe cooperating institution is below 3.0.
