Library and Information StudiesMASTER OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES (M.L.I.S.)PROGRAM273Regular Admission RequirementsAn applicant whose cre den tials meet the following minimum requirements may beconsidered for regular admission:• a grade point average <strong>of</strong> at least 3.0 overall or 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours ina degree program, based on a 4.0 system• an acceptable score on the entrance examination (minimum test scores: generaltest <strong>of</strong> the GRE verbal and quantitative — 1000 or MAT — 50)Not every student whose credentials meet the stated quantitative standards is admitted.Information about the GRE is available from the Educational Testing Service, Prin c e ton,NJ 08540. <strong>The</strong> MAT is given by the testing service <strong>of</strong> most colleges and universities andmay be taken by appointment. Applicants should plan well in advance so that examinationresults are available when needed to support an application for admission. Brailleeditions <strong>of</strong> the GRE and the MAT can be obtained from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>, TestService, Box 870108, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0108.Application materials, which must be submitted electronically, may be obtained fromthe <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> Web site at http://graduate.ua.edu. Applications for ad mis sionmust be com plet ed at least six weeks prior to the registration date for the term for whichadmission is sought.Conditional Admission RequirementsAn applicant whose credentials do not meet the stated requirements may be con sid eredfor conditional admission if the following minimum requirement is satisfi ed:• a grade point average <strong>of</strong> at least 2.5 overall anda GRE or MAT score acceptableto the <strong>School</strong> and the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>A graduate student admitted con di tion al ly removes the con di tion by earning an average<strong>of</strong> “B” or better for the fi rst 12 semester hours <strong>of</strong> graduate-level work completed and bysatisfying any other conditions specifi ed by the <strong>School</strong> at the time <strong>of</strong> admission. If the12 hours are completed in a term in which the total credits exceed 12, the evaluation ismade on the basis <strong>of</strong> all graduate-level work completed at the end <strong>of</strong> that term <strong>of</strong> enrollment.Failure to remove the condition within the fi rst 12 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate work will resultin the student’s being dropped from the program. A student who satisfi es the conditionau to mat i cal ly assumes the status <strong>of</strong> a regularly admitted graduate student.Non-Degree Admission RequirementsA student may be admitted as a non-degree student if that person has either a 3.0undergraduate GPA or an acceptable test score: 50 on the MAT or 1000 on the GREgeneral test. No more than 12 hours may be taken as a non-degree student and appliedto a degree.Degree RequirementsCandidates for the M.L.I.S. degree must earn a minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 semester hours <strong>of</strong>credit, completing all work with a grade average <strong>of</strong> “B” or better. A thesis is not required.All M.L.I.S. students must complete, as part <strong>of</strong> the minimum 36 hours, the following 18hours <strong>of</strong> required courses:LS 500 Organization <strong>of</strong> InformationLS 501 Introduction to Library and Information StudiesLS 502 Research MethodsLS 507 Information Sources and ServicesLS 560 Information Technologies
