354 The University of AlabamaCOLLEGE OF ENGINEERINGGRADUATE STUDYGraduate work in the College of Engineering is administered jointly by the GraduateSchool, the College of Engineering, and various administrative sub di vi sions of the Collegeof Engineering.The Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineeringand Technology (the national accrediting agency for en gi neer ing curricula) has examinedand accredited all of the professional engineering undergraduate curricula. Theun der grad u ate program in computer science is accredited by the Com put er ScienceAc cred i ta tion Commission of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board, a specializedac cred it ing body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Ac cred i ta tion andthe U.S. De part ment of Ed u ca tion.Graduate degrees. The College of Engineering offers the following graduate degrees:• Master of science in aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil en gi neer ing,computer science, electrical engineering, engineering (en vi ron men tal en gi neer ing),en gi neer ing science and mechanics, industrial engineering, me chan i cal en gi neer ing,and metallurgical engineering• Doctor of philosophy in the fi elds of chemical engineering, civil engineering, com put erscience, electrical engineering, engineering science and mechanics, me chan i cal en gi -neer ing, and materials/metallurgical engineering (the Ph.D. in materials/metallurgicalengineering is offered jointly with The University of Al a bama at Bir ming ham)Joint Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science. A Ph.D. degree in thefi eld of materials science is also offered, in collaboration with The University of Alabamaat Birmingham and The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Full details of the programand its admission requirements may be found in this catalog in the section “In ter -dis cipli nary Programs.”ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSApplicants for graduate work in engineering must apply for admission to the GraduateSchool of the University. All applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose;there are no exceptions. Regular admission to graduate study may be granted to applicantswho• have earned baccalaureate degrees from institutions with programs accredited bythe Ac cred i ta tion Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or, for applicantsfor com put er science programs, programs accredited by ABET or the ComputingSci enc es Accreditation Board (CSAB)• have overall grade point averages of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or at least 3.0 forthe last 60 hours completedOther appropriate requirements may be established by the individual engineering departments.Regular admission may also be granted to applicants who are not graduates of ABETorCSAB-accredited programs and who have Graduate Record Examination generaltest scores of 1000 or higher, as specifi ed by the department of interest. Each applicantshould have the equivalent of a 3.0 or higher grade point average (as in requirementslisted above). Other appropriate requirements may be es tab lished by the individualengineering departments.To enter traditional engineering graduate programs, an applicant’s baccalaureate degreeshould be in a curriculum that was accredited by an accreditation commission of the
