Spanish America before 19003. Golden Age4. Nineteenth-century peninsular5. Twentieth-century peninsular6. Hispanic linguisticsBased on the advice <strong>of</strong> the graduate adviser, appropriate courses taken in these componentswill si mul ta neous ly fulfi ll the Romance lan guag es core requirements listedabove. A student will be held responsible for the items on the M.A. Reading List onlyin the fi eld(s) for which a prescribed course is not <strong>of</strong>fered during the period <strong>of</strong> thestudent’s enrollment or if a student fails to enroll in one <strong>of</strong> the prescribed courses.In consultation with the Spanish graduate adviser, each student must also select aspecial area <strong>of</strong> interest in Hispanic literature. Other specialization options may beavailable based on the discretion <strong>of</strong> the graduate adviser. Degree requirements includesuccess on written and oral comprehensive examinations. <strong>The</strong> written examinationwill be based on the coursework. In addition to questions from the required fi elds,the examination will include a component covering the student’s declared area <strong>of</strong>interest. (It is the student’s responsibility to keep syllabi from each course on fi le forreference.) Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the written examination allows the student toproceed to the oral component, which will be a follow-up to the written examinationbut will also include a presentation based on the declared area <strong>of</strong> interest.• Spanish Option, applied linguistics version without thesis (Plan II). Curriculumre quire ments: 36 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework. <strong>The</strong> applied lin guis tics track involves threecomponents: language, linguistics, and applied linguistics. <strong>The</strong> language com po nentconsists <strong>of</strong> 21 hours <strong>of</strong> course credit in Spanish language, literature, and culture(a minimum <strong>of</strong> 6 hours must be in Peninsular literature and 6 hours in Spanish-American literature). <strong>The</strong> linguistics com po nent is com prised <strong>of</strong> a 3-hour de scrip tivelin guis tics course (SP 556). <strong>The</strong> applied linguistics com po nent consists <strong>of</strong> 12 hours<strong>of</strong> coursework in second language acquisition and pedagogy (SP 502, EN 613, andtwo <strong>of</strong> the following: SP 581, EN 610, EN 612, CIE 577, or other approved courses;for descriptions <strong>of</strong> courses bearing the EN prefi x, see the Department <strong>of</strong> Englishsection <strong>of</strong> this catalog; for a description <strong>of</strong> CIE 577, see “Curriculum and InstructionCourse Descriptions” in the College <strong>of</strong> Education section). Curriculum requirements:30–36 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework. <strong>The</strong> curriculum requires study <strong>of</strong> French and Spanish,one as the major and one as the minor. <strong>The</strong> major includes a minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 hours.<strong>The</strong> minor includes a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 hours. More than the minimum is rec om mend edfor both the major and the minor. <strong>Graduate</strong> courses in Italian studies are also available(see the RL prefi x in course listings below).
