In graduate programs that in clude clinical components, practicums,and/or internships, each stu dent’s ef fec tive ness will be given a broad-basedeval u a tion by faculty and supervisors. Final decisions will be based on factors suchas course grades, dem on strat ed clinical com pe tence, personality fac tors, and relevanttest scores.Graduation RequirementsGrade point average. <strong>The</strong> student must have a cumulative average grade <strong>of</strong> notless than “B” in graduate courses undertaken at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>. Gradesbelow “C” are counted in computing scholastic averages, but do not carry credit towarda degree.Seventy-five percent rule. At least 75 percent <strong>of</strong> the hours taken must have beencompleted with grades <strong>of</strong> not less than “B” at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>. In applyingthis 75 percent rule, a maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 hours <strong>of</strong> thesis research may be counted, if appropriate.400-level courses. A maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 semester hours <strong>of</strong> 400-level course credit maybe accepted for a master’s degree program only if conditions noted in the followingsection (titled “Course-Numbering System) are met. No 400-level credit (except the6 hours accepted toward the master’s degree) may be accepted for doctoral degreeprograms.Pass/fail courses. A maximum <strong>of</strong> 20 percent <strong>of</strong> the student’s required course creditmay be taken on a pass/fail basis.COURSE-NUMBERING SYSTEMCourses numbered 400–499 are primarily for advanced undergraduate students.<strong>Graduate</strong> students may use 400-level courses for graduate credit only if (a) the department<strong>of</strong>fering the courses also <strong>of</strong>fers a graduate degree, (b) prior approval is obtainedfrom the student’s graduate adviser and the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>, (c) the course is taughtby a member <strong>of</strong> the graduate faculty, and (d) the course is not available at the master’s(500) level. (e) <strong>Graduate</strong> students in such courses are required to do appropriate extrawork and demonstrate a higher level <strong>of</strong> mastery. Under no circumstances will graduatecredit be given for courses below 400.<strong>The</strong> form for approval <strong>of</strong> 400-level courses is available at http://graduate.ua.edu/ap pli ca tion/forms.html.A maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 semester hours <strong>of</strong> 400-level course credit may be accepted for amaster’s degree program, and only if a form for approval <strong>of</strong> 400-level coursework forgraduate credit is completed and approved by the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> prior to the semesterin which the 400-level coursework will be taken.
