A description<strong>of</strong> the typical confi guration for the various thesis tracks <strong>of</strong> the master <strong>of</strong> arts in Romancelanguage follows. <strong>The</strong> Romance languages core requirements do not apply to thesistracks.• French Option, standard version with thesis (Plan I). Curriculum re quire ments:27 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework and a thesis, including at least one course in each <strong>of</strong> thefollowing six fi elds:1. Medieval and Renaissance2. Early modern (seventeenth and eighteenth centuries)3. Nineteenth century4. Twentieth and twenty-fi rst centuries5. Francophone and French studies6. French linguisticsStudents must pass a comprehensive examination based on their coursework inthe six fi elds <strong>of</strong> study. However, students may be exempted from examination in amaximum <strong>of</strong> two fi elds in three ways: fi rst, by writing a thesis in the fi eld; second, bywriting a research paper in the fi eld and presenting it at a pr<strong>of</strong>essional conference;or third, by satisfactorily com plet ing two courses in the fi eld, earning a grade <strong>of</strong> “A”or “B.” (Note: Only 24 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework are required for students simultaneouslyenrolled in the M.B.A. program.)• French Option, applied linguistics track with thesis (Plan I). Curriculum requirements:30 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework and a thesis. In addition to the thesis, the appliedlinguistics track involves three components: language, linguistics, and applied linguistics.<strong>The</strong> language com po nent consists <strong>of</strong> 15 hours <strong>of</strong> course credit in Frenchlanguage, literature, and/or culture. <strong>The</strong> linguistics component is com prised <strong>of</strong> a3-hour descriptive linguistics course (FR 561). <strong>The</strong> applied linguistics componentconsists <strong>of</strong> 12 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework in second language acquisition and pedagogy(FR 512, EN 613, and two <strong>of</strong> the following: FR 515, EN 610, EN 612, CIE 577,or other approved courses; for descriptions <strong>of</strong> courses bearing the EN prefi x, seethe Department <strong>of</strong> English section <strong>of</strong> this catalog; for a description <strong>of</strong> CIE 577,see “Curriculum and Instruction Course Descriptions” in the College <strong>of</strong> Educationsection). Degree requirements include success on com pre hen sive writ ten and oralcomprehensive examinations. Hispanic linguisticsModern Languages and ClassicsA student will be held responsible for the items on the M.A. Reading List only in thefi eld(s) for which a prescribed course is not <strong>of</strong>fered during the period <strong>of</strong> the student’senrollment or if a student fails to enroll in one <strong>of</strong> the prescribed courses. In consultationwith the Spanish graduate adviser, each student must also select a specialarea <strong>of</strong> interest in Hispanic literature. Other specialization options may be availablebased on the discretion <strong>of</strong> the graduate adviser.
