Also visit us on the Web at http://www.bamadining.com.VETERANS SERVICES<strong>The</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Veterans Services provides assistance to veterans, reservists, servicepersons, and eligible dependents. <strong>The</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice processes all certifications that must be filedwith the Department <strong>of</strong> Veterans Affairs before educational benefits can be received. Studentsmust register with the Office <strong>of</strong> Veterans Services each semester to begin receivingor to continue receiving benefits. In addition to helping students apply for benefits andcomplete VA certifications, the Office <strong>of</strong> Veterans Services provides academic, personal,and financial referrals to students in VA programs. VA-sponsored work-study programsand tutoring are available to those who qualify. Students eligible for veterans benefitsinclude VEAP veterans, reservists and veterans on the “New GI Bill,” disabled veterans,dependents <strong>of</strong> persons who have total and permanent service-connected disabilities, anddependents <strong>of</strong> persons whose deaths were service-con nect ed.Information about services, application procedures, and compliance with VA re quire -ments is available at the Office <strong>of</strong> Veterans Services, 106 Student Services Center, orby contacting <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>, Offi ce <strong>of</strong> Veterans Services, Box 870162,Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0162; (205) 348-6770, fax (205) 348-2989.UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICE<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Health Service is to provide high-quality, low-cost ambulatoryhealth care and related services to the students <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>; toeducate the <strong>University</strong> community concerning health issues and prevention strat e gies;to develop collaborative relationships with related academic areas; and to provide bothteaching and learning opportunities to our students and faculty. Students taking morethan 4 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework pay a mandatory student health fee as part <strong>of</strong> their tuitionand are thus eligible for care. Students taking 4 hours or less may waive the health fee,and if they waive the health fee, they are not eligible for care. Health services are notavailable during the holiday periods when the <strong>University</strong> is not <strong>of</strong>fi cially in session. Asa registration requirement, all new students born in or after 1957 must provide pro<strong>of</strong><strong>of</strong> immunization with two measles-containing vaccines after their fi rst birthday; one <strong>of</strong>these vaccinations must have been an MMR and must have been given after 1980. Allnew students must be appropriately screened for tuberculosis within the last year as aregistration re quire ment.<strong>The</strong> Russell Student Health Center (RSHC) is a modern facility designed especially forthe <strong>University</strong> Health Service’s purposes. <strong>The</strong> service is accredited by the AccreditationAssociation for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and is the only accredited studenthealth service in the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> to earn this distinction.Outpatient services. Full clinical services are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.Monday through Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. (During Interim term and the summer session, thehealth center closes at 5:00 p.m. weekdays and is not open on the weekend.) Studentsare strongly encouraged to schedule appointments with the health care provider bycalling (205) 348-APPT. Care consists <strong>of</strong> general medicine, women’s health, coun sel ingand psy cho log i cal services, and minor surgery. Referrals to appropriate specialists areavail able. <strong>The</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> the specialized care is the re spon si bil i ty <strong>of</strong> the student.Any student requiring services not available at the health center will be transferredor referred elsewhere at the student’s expense, under the care <strong>of</strong> a physician <strong>of</strong> thestudent’s choice. Ambulance service is not furnished.Charges. <strong>The</strong> student health fee pro vides ac cess to all Russell Student Health Cen ter(RSHC) ser vic es and cov ers the cost <strong>of</strong> RSHC’s nurs ing, as sess ment, tri age, healthed u ca tion, health pro mo tion, and coun sel ing ser vic es. As is true in oth er health caresettings, there is a charge for <strong>of</strong> fi ce vis its with RSHC’s health care pro vid ers, X-rays, andlab o ra to ry tests. RSHC accepts all health insurance plans and will bill your insurancecarrier for these services. RSHC pro vides health care for all stu dents wheth er or not theyhave health in sur ance and with out regard for their abil i ty to pay for services.
