Schroeder, CoordinatorOffi ce: Dauphin Island Sea Lab<strong>The</strong> graduate Marine Science Program (MSP) is a dual-campus program <strong>of</strong> the Department<strong>of</strong> Biological Sciences at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> and <strong>University</strong> programsat the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), a facility <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alabama</strong> Marine EnvironmentalSciences Consortium (MESC). Both sites provide unique facilities to support educationand research in the fi eld <strong>of</strong> marine science. <strong>The</strong> main campus facilities include a marinealgae and marine invertebrate collection. At DISL, there is a diversely trained residentfaculty available year-round to teach graduate-level courses that are part <strong>of</strong> the MSPcurriculum, to serve as thesis advisers, to provide support space, and to employ residentstudents in funded extramural research projects. <strong>The</strong> library at DISL specializes inpublications that focus on the marine environment.In addition, DISL provides support for <strong>University</strong> programs by way <strong>of</strong> a research facilitycontaining <strong>of</strong>fi ces, laboratories, and support facilities for the resident graduate faculty;three lecture-room/teaching-laboratory buildings; and two dormitories, an effi ciencyapartment building, and a dining hall. Access to the bay and Gulf waters is available viascheduled use <strong>of</strong> the 65-foot steel-hull R/V A. E. Verrilland by a variety <strong>of</strong> outboardmotor-poweredcraft that can be towed to different sites for launching.Courses <strong>of</strong>fered at DISL carry the same credit toward graduate degrees as those taughton the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong> campus by the Department <strong>of</strong> Biological Sciences.Admission RequirementsStudents seek ing admission to the Marine Science Pro gram must sat is fy the generalad mis sion re quire ments <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>.For further specifi c in for ma tion, please contact Dr. William W. Each can di date will be guided by a graduate com mit tee consisting <strong>of</strong> at least threemembers ap point ed by the dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Usually, one member <strong>of</strong> thecommittee will be a qualifi ed member <strong>of</strong> the faculty in res i dence on the Tuscaloosacam pus.2. Each student must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> 8 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credit on the Tuscaloosacam pus. Normally, this occurs during the student’s fi rst cal en dar year in theGrad u ate <strong>School</strong>.3. No foreign lan guage is required.4. Each student will undergo a pre lim i nary ex am i na tion prepared by the student’sgraduate committee and de signed to be an swered in about four hours a day over threeconsecutive days. <strong>The</strong> ex am i na tion will be ad min is tered by the committee chair per sonno later than the third semester <strong>of</strong> enrollment. Prior to the examination, it is expectedthat the student will discuss prep a ra tion and subject matter with committee members.5. Each student will participate in an interdisciplinary effort (e.g., cruise or fi eld exercise)at some time during residence at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
