Using both primaryand secondary sources, the seminar will examineBaroque art in relation to contemporaryart theory in the 17th and early 18th centuries.Offered alternate years. V.6a.ARTH 354 (3)–Later 20th-Century Art:Post World War II to the PresentArea III, 18th Century to the PresentPrerequisite: ARTH 116. Post-war trends fromAbstract Expressionism to Post-Modernism willbe considered in their historical, cultural, andcritical context. III.W, V.6a.ARTH 361 (1, 2, or 3)–Special StudyPrerequisites: 100-level ARTH course and permissionof the instructor. The study of an intermediatelevel topic by an individual student orby a small group of students under the immediatesupervision of a faculty member.ARTH 377 (1, 2, or 3)–InternshipPrerequisites: Three credits in ARTH and permissionof the instructor, department chair,and dean. This course is graded P/CR/NC only.ARTH 452 (3)–Senior SeminarPrerequisite: Open only to senior art historymajors. An examination of selected topics in thehistory of art. Specific requirements of the coursewill be decided in consultation with the majors eachyear and may include papers, oral reports, and writtenexaminations. This course is designated as theculminating exercise in the major and is required ofall majors. III.O, III.W, V.6a.ARTH 461 (1, 2, or 3)–Independent StudyPrerequisites: One 100-level ARTH course, one200-level ARTH course, and permission of theinstructor. Pursuit of an upper level researchproject determined in advance by the student inconsultation with a faculty member who will actas the sponsor.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>Honors ProgramThe Honors Program is designed for studentsof exceptional initiative and abilitywho enter the program as first-year studentsby invitation, or by application within the firsttwo years of their college career. The HonorsProgram is designed to foster the kinds ofcritical thinking, cross-disciplinary curiosity,analytical and creative rigor expected in Honorscourses in all disciplines, to enrich the experiencesfor entering and lower-division Honorsstudents through intellectually challengingcourse work, and to provide significant opportunitiesto interact with an academically energeticcohort during four years of Honors study.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> students who are not accepted intothe program as incoming first-year Honorsstudents may apply for admission after the fallsemester. Students who transfer to <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>from another institution also may apply foradmission to the program.There are four types of Honors courses.With the exception of the First-year HonorsInquiry and First-year Seminar, Honors coursesare open to all interested students, with permissionof the instructor.1) First-year Honors Inquiry: IncomingHonors students begin an Honors courseof study by enrolling in a one-credit HonorsInquiry class in the fall. The Honors Inquiryclass provides a foundation in critical andcreative thinking across and among disciplines.By engaging with issues related to atheme, current news events, or the researchinterests of <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> faculty, students willbe introduced to practices of scholarshipexpected in a sustained Honors course ofstudy at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>.b) Honors Seminars : seminars developedespecially for the Honors Program designedto foster critical and creative thinking.Honors seminars are offered at the 100-,200-, and 300-level.
