<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog Anthropology and ArchaeologyAnthropologyand ArchaeologyAnthropology, the study of humankind,investigates the entire range of the humanexperience across cultures and over time.Its holistic approach encourages students toexplore the relationships among productionsystems, age and gender roles, family and kinshiprelations, relations of power and inequality,and religious beliefs in societies throughoutthe world. Cultural anthropology examinesritual, symbols, cosmological systems, formsof social organization, economics, and politicsfrom a cross-cultural perspective. The departmentoffers major and minor programs inanthropology.Archaeology explores societies and culturesof the past through their material remainsSuch remains include monumental and occupationalsites, artifactual and natural materials,and environmental landscapes and rockart. The department’s major and minor inarchaeology take an anthropological approachto understanding past societies, while alsoallowing students to explore archaeologicalapproaches in other disciplines such as classicalstudies, history, and museum studies. Studentslearn technical aspects of archaeological work,and explore the theory and methods used byarchaeologists to interpret the material remainsof the past. Courses cover both prehistoric andhistoric archaeology, and topics such as thesocial evolution of societies and the archaeologyof death, gender, and everyday life. Thefinal component of the major and minor is participationin an archaeological field program orinternship, providing experience in the methodsof archaeological excavation and analysis.The Anthropology Major(34 semester hours)Required:ANTH 221 (3) -Culture, Society, and theIndividualANTH 224 (3) -EthnographyANTH 328 (3) -Ritual and WorldviewSenior Exercises:ANTH 451 (1) -Senior Workshop inAnthropology andArchaeologyANTH 452 (3) -Senior SeminarChoose 1 of the following courses:ANTH 215 (3) -Peoples and Cultures ofAfricaANTH 268 (3) -Peoples and Cultures of theMediterraneanANTH 270 (3) -Peoples and Cultures ofSouth AsiaANTH 272 (3) -Peoples and Cultures of theMiddle EastChoose 1 of the following courses:ANTH 317 (3) -Ecological AnthropologyANTH 334 (3) -Gifts and CommoditiesAnd choose 5 additional three-creditcourses in anthropology excluding internships.No more than one directed, special, or independentstudy may be counted toward the major. Studentsmay apply one archaeology course, excludingARCH 115, to the major in anthropology.Note: Students choosing to declare majors inboth anthropology and archaeology may useANTH 452 for only one of the majors.
