(7 credits)nCourse designations are V.8a and V.8b.(Choose 2 courses for 6 credits in “a” and a1-credit lab in “b”.)nV.8b must be satisfied in conjunction witha Knowledge Area V.8a course in biology,chemistry, engineering, environmental science,or physics.nV.8a introduces students to science throughan examination of major ideas and discoveriesby relating theories to the evidenceupon which they are based.nV.8b teaches students to conduct a controlledexperiment and to evaluate criticallythe design and the results of the experiment.General Education Requirement RestrictionsNo more than three knowledge area requirementsmay be satisfied by courses from onedepartment. At least one course in the knowledgeareas must be taken in the departments ofanthropology, sociology, economics, or government.Courses taken to fulfill Knowledge Arearequirements may fulfill Skills requirementsas well as major and minor requirements. Acourse may be listed in, and may be taken tofulfill, no more than two knowledge areas andone skill area or one knowledge area and twoskills areas.For some students Knowledge Area V.3will require 6-12 hours because a minimumintermediate skill level is needed. A student forwhom English is a second language may fulfillKnowledge Area V.3 by taking English 104and one literature course in English that doesnot include translations of works in her nativelanguage.The Pass/Credit/No Credit grading optionis not allowed in any course being used to satisfyKnowledge Area V.3.Some courses taken in a student’s major orminor field may count toward fulfilling generaleducation requirements. An entering studentmay satisfy a general education requirementby a score of 4 or 5 on a CEEB AdvancedPlacement Test if the material covered by thetest is appropriate to that particular requirement.General education requirements mayalso be satisfied by transfer credit after evaluationby the Registrar’s Office.Students in the 3-2 engineering programand those who study abroad are still required topass three writing intensive courses in additionto the first-year writing requirement. To meetthe writing skills requirement, these studentsmay take two writing intensive courses in oneyear or obtain approval from the Registrar’sOffice to count a course taken elsewhere. Onlyone so approved outside course may be countedtoward the writing skills requirement.Transfer students are required to take onewriting-intensive course for each year theyattend <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>.Major RequirementsStudents are allowed to declare a major at anytime, but are required to do so in the secondterm of the sophomore year. At that time, a studentmust plan with her major advisor a programfor the junior and senior years. A studentmust complete the major requirements specifiedin the departmental statement. A minimum2.00 grade point average in the major isrequired for graduation. The major grade pointaverage calculation includes all courses taken in42
