equirements for the degree<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>Graduation RequirementsTo be eligible for a degree, a candidate mustbe enrolled as a full-time student (at least 12academic credit hours) at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> for aminimum of two years, including the senioryear. The degree program is normally completedin four years. With the permission of theEligibility Committee, an exceptionally qualifiedstudent may complete her degree programin as few as three years.Each candidate must complete 120 credithours, of which at least 60 credit hours mustbe earned at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>. These credits includeGeneral Education Requirements and requirementsfor the major. No student may countmore than 51 credit hours in a single departmenttoward the minimum requirements fora <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> degree. Courses taken to satisfythe first-year writing requirement do notcount toward this 51-hour maximum. No morethan 5 credits of PHED and/or RDPR courseswith the general education designation of IV.3will count toward the degree. Additional IV.3courses in these departments may be taken butthe credits above the maximum of 5 will not beapplied toward the 120 credits required for adegree. No more that 12 semester credit hoursof internship/practicum credit may be countedtoward a degree. No more that 18 semestercredit hours of summer school work may becounted toward a degree with the exceptionof students who have earned an Associatedegree and transfer to <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> under anarticulation agreement. These transfer studentsmay have all Associate degree summer coursestransferred according to the <strong>College</strong>’s transfercredit policy. Transfer students for whom 18 ormore summer credits are accepted, will not beallowed to transfer additional credits for summercourses taken after they enroll at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>.A degree candidate must obtain both aminimum cumulative grade point average of2.00 (the equivalent of a “C” average), anda minimum 2.00 grade point average in hermajor(s) subject(s), including all courses takenin the department that can count towards themajor(s), as well as all other courses which areapplied to the major(s) requirements as statedin the Catalog. Each senior must pass the seniorculminating exercise in her major(s) as designatedby each department. This culminatingexercise must be taken at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>.General Education ProgramThe purpose of the General Education Programat <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong> is to provide all studentswith a common pattern of skills, experiences,and knowledge, which prepares them to beinformed, active members of the world community.The program goals include: to helpstudents develop strong skills in communicationand quantitative reasoning, to provideexperiences that enhance the academic program,to clarify the basis for a broad liberal artsbackground, to encourage students to reflectupon their goals and progress, and to integratethe various aspects of a <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> educationin a comprehensive program. Students benefitmore from the college experience if they understandthe value of a liberal arts curriculum andactively cultivate, in and out of the classroom,their intellectual, cultural, physical, social, andcreative potential to prepare for a life of continualgrowth, responsibility, and fulfillment.Students will be more confident of their abilityto express their ideas, more competent to makedecisions based on their enhanced knowledgeof themselves and the world, and thus betterable to derive the maximum benefits from their<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> education.Students begin the General EducationProgram during their first year and follow itthroughout their college career. The programis designed so that every student progressesbeyond the skills, experiences, and knowledgewith which she entered <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>. Therequirements are not completely separate—inmany cases these areas will overlap and willcoincide with the major and minor requirements.38
