<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog Academic Honorsat least a 3.3 in mathematical courses and in oneor more of the following ways: performance inthe classroom, academic activities outside theclassroom, service to the department, leadershipon campus, and service to the local community.Jessica Steinbrenner Molloy Award honors anoutstanding senior in theatre arts, chosen by thefaculty of that department.Irene Mitchell Moore Scholarship, establishedby Irene Mitchell Moore, is given tobenefit students of the Center for Civic Renewalwho intend to pursue careers in public servicewith a goal of fostering the habits of effectivecitizenship engagement.The Lawrence Nelson Award was establishedin 1971 in memory of Professor Nelson, whotaught English at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> from 1946 to1970. It is awarded to a senior chosen by theDepartment of English for general excellencein English.The Pauline Roberts Otis Award was establishedin memory of Mrs. Otis by her daughter,Susan Otis Thompson ’52, who studied in Pariswith the <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> Junior Year in France. Theprize is awarded each year to the senior studentof highest academic distinction having been amember of the Junior Year in France program.The W. Edward Overly Award was establishedby W. Edward Overly, parent of Lynda ’64. Itis awarded to a senior who has demonstratedscholarly achievement in Spanish.Outstanding Scholar in Education Awardis given in recognition to young women inVirginia colleges who have completed theteacher preparation programs in an exemplaryfashion. It is given to advance the professionalinterest and position of women in educationand to honor women who have given or whoevidence potential for distinctive service in anyfield of education. The award is given by DeltaKappa Gamma, a national honor sorority forleading women in education.The Everingham Rickards and CaptainGarrett V. S. Rickards Award was establishedin 1974 by Frances Murrell Rickards ’10, inmemory of her son, who died in World War II,and her husband. This award is given to one ormore members of the rising sophomore classwho best demonstrate potential for leadership,academic excellence, and community involvement,which have distinguished the <strong>College</strong>throughout its history.The Shakespeare Prize is presented to thestudent who demonstrates excellence in one orboth of the upper-level Shakespeare courses.Mary MacKintosh Sherer Merit Scholarship,established by friends of Mary MacKintoshSherer, is awarded to a rising junior who is aleader and a scholar and who demonstrates theoutgoing and cheerful qualities long associatedwith Mary MacKintosh Sherer.<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> Fine Arts Scholarship is given inrecognition to the senior who best shows greatpromise as an artist and a scholar.The Anne Gary Pannell Taylor Award inhistory, honoring the fifth president of the<strong>College</strong>, is presented to a senior history majorwho has achieved the highest cumulative gradepoint average.The Lucile Barrow Turner Award is awardedto a student or students majoring in music or indrama to provide scholarship assistance.The Walker Family Award was establishedin 1983 by alumnae and friends of the Walkerfamily, whose home near <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> was acenter of hospitality for many years. The awardis presented to a senior of above-average academicstanding who best possesses the spiritof the Walkers: a cheerful, positive disposition,showing in her relationships warmth, generosity,and humility.The Leigh Woolverton Prize for Excellence inthe Visual Arts was established in memory ofLeigh Woolverton ’82, by her mother, family,and friends.205
