<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog medieval and renaissance studiesDuring the Renaissance (c. 1400-1650),Europe experienced a period of cultural renewalstemming from a re-interpretation of Classicalideas. Momentous changes resulted fromhumanism, the Reformation, the ScientificRevolution, and the Age of Exploration. Wewill study these historical developments as wellas the dramatic transformations in arts, literature,social values, and notions of selfhood thataccompanied them.Acknowledging and questioning the differencesthat have traditionally been seen asseparating the Middle Ages and the Renaissancemakes the examination of both periods morecompelling. The Medieval and RenaissanceStudies minor complements <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong><strong>College</strong>’s commitment to the liberal arts andillustrates the high level and rigorous qualityof study available to its students. Also, byacknowledging a student’s concentration inthis area, her chance at graduate study in one ofthese fields is greatly increased.
