college fees<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>Federal law requires the return of unearnedfederal aid funds to their respective programswhen a student withdraws from the <strong>College</strong>before completing 60 percent of any semesterfor which she received such aid. “Unearned”funds mean the amount that would have beenused to cover the student’s charges for theportion of the semester she was not enrolled,according to a federally prescribed formula.If, as a result of the return of these funds, anunpaid balance is left on the student’s bill, sheor her family is responsible for paying it.No refund will be given to any student whois suspended or expelled from the <strong>College</strong> fordisciplinary reasons.Tuition Refund InsuranceThe <strong>College</strong> has made available tuition refundinsurance through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. ofBoston. This insurance is optional. However, awaiver card must be returned indicating choice.Contact the Business Office for details.Applied Music FeeMusic Department facilities for practice are availablefor use by students registered for credit ornon-credit music courses in the Departmentof Music and students preparing applied musicplacement auditions or other departmentalauditions (with permission of the MusicDepartment). An applied music fee of $425 persemester per class will be charged to the student.Books and Academic SuppliesThese may be purchased at the Book Shop.The cost for any year will vary with the courseselected but in general ranges up to $500.Health CenterThe student will be charged for any laboratorystudies or medications ordered.Student Life FundThis charge covers the annual dues of variousstudent organizations and supports other studententerprises. By vote of the student body,a fee of $275 is paid annually by every residentstudent. Non-resident students pay $225. Thisfee will be billed on the tuition statement, andis due August 1.Room Damage DepositEach student must make a room damagedeposit of $75 by August 1. This deposit will beused to pay for any damage to <strong>College</strong> propertybeyond normal wear and tear, and for violationsof room decorating regulations. If thereare no damages or violations of decoratingregulations and the room is left in the sameclean condition as when it was first occupied,the room deposit will be refunded.Riding Program FeesStudents who elect to participate in the RidingProgram for credit may purchase blocks ofrides on <strong>College</strong>-owned horses for which thereis a charge by the term. The blocks of rides offerthe student an option as to the number of ridestaken per week. Each block includes two lessonsper week with the remaining rides taken independently.RDPR 162 is a quarter course forentry-level riders. This course includes sevenrides with instruction for an administrative feeof $100.A student may receive permission to bringher own horse to <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> if she agrees tosupport the program’s rules and regulations, ifshe demonstrates adequate riding ability, and ifthe horse is found to be suited to the program.Application forms for this purpose may beobtained from the Riding Center. The <strong>College</strong>does reserve the right to refuse to accept or continueto keep in the stable any privately ownedhorse. Rates for horse usage and private horseboard are as follows:20
