<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog student lifephysician for on-site visits and consultation.A licensed mental health professional offerscounseling and assistance to students with personal,family, social, or educational concerns.An additional agreement with a psychiatristprovides consultation services and care. Studentleaders, known as <strong>Sweet</strong>PEAs, promote wellnessand healthy lifestyle choices through a range ofprograms.All services are confidential. Health andCounseling Services offices are open Mondaythrough Friday during normal college businesshours. After-hours emergencies are handled bytrained campus safety officers, residence hallstaff, and the Amherst Rescue Squad.The Outdoor ProgramThe <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> Outdoor Program (SWEBOP)provides outdoor recreational activities andadventures that foster personal growth, leadership,and environmental responsibility.SWEBOP’s popular series of outdoor programsinclude backpacking and hiking, rock climbing,caving, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and avariety of other activities. These adventures areavailable to students at all skill levels.Students are given additional opportunitiesto become outdoor instructors who build groupdynamics, communication and leadership skills.They are also trained in the technical aspectsneeded for each adventure program.Student Leadership<strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s student leadership programsprepare women to become responsiblemembers of a global community. Through anintense and supportive educational environment,faculty and staff guide students to leadwith integrity, honor and commitment. Theydo so by incorporating the college’s strong liberalarts curriculum, creating and encouraginglearning opportunities within and outside thetraditional classroom, the campus communityand the world.Students have the opportunity to participatein the Certificate Program; a three-year commitmenton the part of the student. Recognizingthat each student develops at a different paceand their interests are as varied as the definitionof leadership, the program incorporatescriteria that encourages individuality, focus,and involvement on the part of the student.The Leadership Certificate Program combinesacademic courses with campus workshops, lecturesand meetings, community service/campusengagement opportunities, internship and/orstudy abroad options.Students not desiring to commit to theLeadership Certificate Program are encouragedto participate in programmatic areas thatare of interest to them. Each academic year,other opportunities for leadership include:participating in LEAP (Leaders Emerging andAchieving Program), attending the annualStudent Leadership Conference, applying for anumber of campus leadership positions, beingnominated into Who’s Who Among American<strong>College</strong>s and Universities, and selection intoODK (Omicron Delta Kappa).VolunteerismWhatever the interest, whatever the need, <strong>Sweet</strong><strong>Briar</strong> staff are willing to help students becomeinvolved with a volunteer project or civicengagement opportunity. Information regardingresources is available through the Chaplain’sOffice.Student Involvement and ProgramsStudent Involvement and Programs promotesinvolvement in social, cultural, academic andwellness activities which enhance the classroomexperience and helps students to create rich andinteresting lives on and off campus. Studentsare encouraged to design and produce a varietyof events including social events and parties,concerts, comedy nights, game nights, poetryreadings, athletic activities, and more. Fundingis available to support student initiatives.15
