<strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> Catalog requirements for the degreea department that can count towards the major,as well as all other courses that are applied tothe major requirements as designated by eachdepartment. Each senior must pass the seniorculminating exercise in her major as designatedby the department. This culminating exercisemust be completed at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> <strong>College</strong>.MajorsThe following majors are offered:AnthropologyArchaeologyBiochemistry and Molecular BiologyBiologyBusinessChemistryClassicsDanceEconomicsEngineering ManagementEngineering ScienceEnglishEnglish and Creative WritingEnvironmental ScienceEnvironmental StudiesFrenchGermanGerman StudiesGovernmentHistoryHistory of ArtInternational AffairsItalian StudiesLiberal StudiesMathematical EconomicsMathematicsModern Languages and LiteraturesMusicPhilosophyPhysicsPsychologyReligionSociologySpanishStudio ArtTheatreSelf-designedInterdisciplinary MajorsA self-designed major may be planned by astudent in consultation with a faculty advisorfrom a sponsoring department or program(with approval of the department or programinvolved) and representatives of the otherdepartment(s) or program(s) involved. Themajor must include at least 36 credit hours. Itshould be comparable in rigor and philosophyto other majors offered at <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong>, showa progression in complexity, and include adesignated culminating experience. Normally,a minimum of 18 credits should be in the sponsoringdepartment or program; a minimum of27 credits must be at the 200-level or above. Atleast 9 of the 27 credits must be at the 300-levelor above. The culminating experience may beone of these courses. A student must have agrade point average of 3.00 before she will bepermitted to undertake this type of major.The student and her principal faculty advisorshould submit the Self-designed InterdisciplinaryMajor Proposal to the Dean of the<strong>College</strong> by March 15 of the student’s sophomoreyear, and at this time any proposed independentstudy courses must have a descriptioncomparable to that of a typical course. Theproposal should be signed by the chair of thesponsoring department or program and byother faculty members who have contributedto the proposal. The proposal will be reviewedby a standing subcommittee of the InstructionCommittee consisting of the Dean and twofaculty members appointed by the Chair of thecommittee. The subcommittee may approve,approve with emendations, or reject the proposal.An accepted program of study may beamended after its acceptance by petition to theDean, who will consult the subcommittee.43
