(ANTH 112His open to seniors). A broad, general introductionto selected concepts and topics in culturalanthropology through ethnographic accounts ofsocieties from different world regions. Questionsabout differing social practices and cultural valueswill be explored, along with questions abouthow anthropologists examine the objects of theirstudies and critical examination of analyticalconcepts such as culture, tradition, ritual, andkinship. The course is designed primarily forfirst- and second-year students. V.4.ANTH 114 (3)–Introduction toArchaeologyAn introduction to the theory and methods ofanthropological archaeology and a survey ofsome of the prehistoric societies in differentparts of the world. III.Q, V.1ANTH 215 (3)–Peoples and Cultures of AfricaAn exploration of anthropological approaches toAfrica, focusing on selected societies. The courseexamines the dynamism of African culturesand their engagement with the world system invarious domains. Among possible topics in thecourse are engagements with colonialism andglobalization, art and aesthetics, social organization,ideas of the state, health and healing,religion and worldview, personhood and sentiments,and gendered experiences. V.4.ANTH 221 (3)–Culture, Society, and theIndividualPrerequisite: Not open to first-year students.An introduction to the theoretical foundationsof anthropology. We examine the emergence ofspecific problematics in anthropology: What isthe relationship of the individual to society? Toculture? What are the implications of talking aboutsociety as structured? About cultures as different?How do we account for change and diversity? Thecourse introduces these questions through theexamination of theoretical sources and supplementedby some ethnographic studies. V.5.ANTH 224 (3)–EthnographyPrerequisite: ANTH 112 or one 200-levelANTH course. A critical evaluation of the waysanthropologists study Western and non-Westerncultures and the ways anthropologists shapecoherent narratives. A practical introductionto fieldwork techniques, ethnographic methods,ethical dilemmas, and the conventions ofanthropological writing. III.W, V.5.ANTH 233 (3)–Cultural Perspectives onthe Family and SocietyPrerequisite: ANTH 112 or one 200-level ANTHcourse; instructor permission may be given tostudents who have taken upper-level social sciencecourses. An examination of the ideas associated withthe family in anthropology and in different societies,of relationships within the family and betweenfamilies and larger society, and of how such relationshipsare inventively lived in different culturesin historical and contemporary times. Among othertopics, the course may examine ideas of motherhoodand fatherhood; descent and relationship;intra- and inter-national adoptions; new reproductivetechnologies; and the ideas associated with thefamily in national, business, religious, and othercommunity discourses. Offered alternate years. V.5.ANTH 238 (3)–The Anthropology ofGlobalizationPrerequisite: ANTH 112 or one 200-levelANTH course. This course takes a critical lookat globalization, both as an idea about the currentmoment, and how people respond to andcreate contemporary changes.
